Why is this game attempting to connect to the internet and set up MP? Is it a setting somewhere? Note I am playing sp. I can in the log what exactly is doing. Very maddening........

It isn't connecting to the internet. Single player uses an internal server (the localhost part) which the player is connected to as a client. The internet is never used at any point in this process.

Single player works the same way in the sequels and some other games.

Ah, I see... so that's why 'CLIENT: Synchronizing...' is displayed every time an area is loading in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky. Thanks for clearing that up. :)
