I installed Complete 2009, and now, inevitably when I'm running or in combat, the game will freeze. It will take 30+ seconds for it to unfreeze. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, 8Gb RAM, Radeon HD 6670. Game is at 1080P, but most other settings are reduced.

Short freezes are common in SoC anyways due to the a-life (though 30 seconds is a bit much), but also SoC only works on one core. Presuming with that setup you have a dual core (or more), set the affinity to a single core in task manager and see if that helps.

I can't tell if it helps or not. I've just kind of resigned myself to the inevitable pausing (seems to happen in the same places on the map) and tried as best to take it in stride (grab a bite of a snack, sip of soda, etc). Thanks for the post.

30 seconds is pretty extreme. Usually it's a half-second pause and maybe 2 seconds when you come close to a large group of NPCs and it has to run the scripts for all of them.

Any idea what your system is doing during this 30s wait? Is your hard drive light going crazy? If so, maybe there's an issue with your page file and the system is swapping back and forth between memory and disk excessively. Check your page file settings (usually, "let windows handle it all" is just fine) and that you have some space free on the drive that holds your page file.

Another thing to try is disable your anti-virus before playing the game to see if it makes a difference. Sometimes anti-virus will scan large files every time they are accessed and cause long wait times.

If its places like the entrance to bar, halfway across dark valley, inbetween the village and the train car / small bridge in cordon etc... thats normal - as far as I remember it can help to add the no prefetch command line, but ive never bothered myself. I can tell you theres a notable difference between running SoC on my old PC and the new one in regards to freezing though - the pause is greatly reduced so i'd definately see if you can optimise your settings a little more (likely complete mod won't be helping either).

It's a quad core computer with 8 GB of RAM and a SSD; how much better do I need to get for a game from 2007? The graphics card is the only thing left to upgrade, but that's going to be a while. And I installed this computer's operating system less than a month ago; so no bloat. Like I said; I'll just live with it.

Yeah, in that case you'll have to - some mods however cause more of the problem than others, so its often wise to see if there are any "minimod" optimisation extensions too.

This is my music computer, so I keep it off the internet and antivirus free to maximize my resources.

When I open the task manager while it's doing this, one of the cores is being fully utilized. I'm running this on an SSD, and just read that I should turn off indexing on that drive. I put the indexing on a separate HDD, and the load time is now about 10 seconds.

There is a bug in SoC that when you stash hoards of loot in footlockers like in Sidorovich bunker for example the game will pause momentarily when you approach the footlocker, the more loot in it the longer the pause.
GSC never solved that bug in SoC and I don't know if there are mods that solve it, I know from experience the Complete 2009 mod still has it.
Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat don't have this problem though.
