I've come back to the series after a few years break, I used to play with the oblivion lost mod for Shadow of Chernobyl. which was quite wonderful. and I'm wondering if any mods improved on it, with the key features I really enjoyed in oblivion lost being

- Darker nights, making the flashlight and night vision essential

-fixed and expanded AI : Having the duty camp raided by a mind controlling dwarf and other beasties was a new and unexpected treat when I first encountered it in the mod.

-Random blowout events - having to find shelter alongside other fleeing and huddling is simply one of my faveroute gaming experiences with stalker ever

Maybe this'll help ;-)
Since Call of Chernobyl was a mod 2016 award winner on ModDB, maybe you should check it out?
Been playing it for a couple of weeks now. Though I've never finished even the original game, I find myself losing time on this one )

old post i know, ive come a little late to it, but i dont frequent the forums so often anymore, however, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series is my most favourite game ever, and i never have a pc/laptop without a various selection of versions on it/them.

i try to keep up to date as alot of the older great mods, such as oblivion lost, AMK and complete, have been superceded,

all the opinions are of course my own, and everybody differs. but anyone wanting to play any type of stalker is ok with me.

i currently have installed:

SHADOW OF CHERNOBYL versions:

OGSE 0.6.9.3 final standalone patch 2.10R, -
This is probably my favourite version of SHOC, a great mod, with alot of content, but good stuff not just needless rubbish, its like an augmented vanilla, but augmented with awesomness, a much better version of OL if you like.

SHOC Starter 2017 -
This is basically an up to date version of a true vanilla experience, just updated with things such as : ZRP 1.07 , photorealistic zone (better than absolute textures) stalker weather overhaul, Original weapons overhaul 3, shaders max. i would say this is the "go to" for a "vanilla" playthrough of SHOC, infinitely more than complete, which is now horrendously outdated. this has all the bugfixes you need, all the texture updates you need, no additional content you dont need.

LOST ALPHA Directors cut:
this has mixed reviews, google can help you here, it has pros and cons to be fair. When i play it, i dont get a feel for the original vibe of the early builds and stuff, and they added a pretty rubbish plot, but looks wise, its very good, and there is a selection of content that isnt bad.

STALKERSOUP:
again, pros and cons, both this and lost alpha are what id cal "versions" of stalker, not really canon, but still give you the feel... id followed this one since it started, adds a literal ton of stuff, maps, content etc, and is worth having if youre a completionist, but its not necessary. the collector freeplay is fun, not quite like call of chernobyl but its good.it gets a lot of negative coverage, mainly from people who are more "narodnaya solyanka" purists, and alot of what technobacon does is a bit of a vanity project but its worth a go.

Oblivion lost remake 2,5:
this is interesting, this is basically much much closer to the original builds and demos we saw alot of in 2003/2004, more so than any of the other mods claiming to be like the "original concept" of the game, like lost alpha, oblivion lost etc,
graphically, sub par, even on full dynamic lighting, and surprisingly taxing on the system, if you turn certain things too far up, like grass density etc, but good enough to play, and does seem like the builds we saw early on. good to have. the translation is poor (english) but apparently there is a version 3 coming out soon, which will improve on this. ive not got too far into it, but it does seem to give you that "original" stalker feel.

Narodnaya Solyanka Joint Pak 2 /w Patch 2.09 Fix 2 and translation 1.03 by achillesdave
now, this is more for the guys that arent into stalkersoup, and want to give one of the best narodnaya solyanka supermod versions a go, very clean mod, runs well, few ctd's considering the content, lots of good additions, the early game is HARD, and the cave section is unskippable (you can skip it in stalkersoup) it can get a little ridiculous later on, with some outrageous spawn numbers etc, but still good to give it a shot, not necessarily a must have, but good to give a go at least once.

CALL OF PRIPYAT Versions

I Work Alone. 1.2
Excellent mod,an older one for sure, in fact its the precursor to Misery, and although COP itself is fine for vanilla playthroughs, unlike its brother SHOC, what this mod is, is basically a way of improving vanilla, without being an overly invasive overhaul mod, therefore this is how i play COP if i want a close to vanilla game, but with desired improvements. its based on Ceanos call from pripyat i believe, which was one of the first sort of overhaul/tweak mods, i tried for COP.

Misery 2.1.1-
must have in a way, but only for someone after a pretty unforgivable experience. i use it with the addons : misery scope mod, the armed zone and absolute nature 4. .......perfect

Call of chernobyl version 1.4.22 with Roadside Picnic Addons Pack by 0x29a v0.7
This.....i saved the best for last. call of chernobyl itself is a masterpiece........the roadside picnic addon merely makes it ....dare i say it, perfect..? this is my go to stalker game i play most, OGSE comes a close second when im after a shadow of chernobyl vibe, but this one...this one is my world. ill even provide a link for this one, because, well im a fan. if you have any love of the lore, of not only the games, but the literature, roadside picnic etc and the stalker film, this addon is what you need.....

http://www.moddb.com/mods/call-of-chernobyl/addons/roadside-picnic-addons-pack-by-0x29a-v01-1422

google will give you more, this is merely a taster, for yourself or anyone else after something a bit more up to date, or another possibility youve not heard of before. Im afraid i dont play Clear sky, as ....well its crap, and all the maps are in call of chernobyl anyway.

final note, theres a new mod out this year, called "wind of time" for COP, looks interesting, i may try that one soon. with the HD character models, it looks amazing.

This article has some useful and interesting opinion also, basically about the stuff ive talked about, but a different view:

Thank you falster for listing your reccomendations :-)
I didn't know about SHOC Starter and OGSE. Have now installed Starter and like it.
Previously I had tried oblivion lost, but didn't like it mainly due to the way it handled spawns and how it just threw insane waves of mutants at you, ugh. Also, the AI coudn't handle if you were in a vehicle, which made you pretty much invulnerable while in the car.

Still have to try out the COP mods.
Youre most welcome mate, i love the game so much. always have. im glad that it has such a following to keep it alive.

go for OGSE, worth it, you wont regret it.

i thoroughly thoroughly recommend you try call of chernobyl at the earliest opportunity though ( its a cop mod) the modular nature of the mod makes it so you can tweak it to how you want it, and i promise you, its amazing.

granted there isnt really an overall "story" as such, its more like roleplaying stalker, but seriously, thats the ultimate, no?

In fact, I installed call of chernobyl with roadside picnic yesterday. It's indeed amazing :-)
I figured Ecologist start would be easiest, as they are neutral with the military. However the Monolith and mutants at their starting locations totally raped my face lol.
I'm now playing as a Loner from the rookie village. The Arsenal mod actually makes the game quite a bit harder early on, because you find less ammo that actually fits your gun, and even the bandits at the car park have decent gear and they hit hard.
I had one crash when using the DX11 renderer, but with DX10 it's been very stable.
I'll have a look at the addons later, it's indeed nice you can plug-in modules like that, Arsenal was appearantly included already.

excellent choice, im pleased, id certainly try a few different ones also, but i think with regard to the purest form of roleplaying the stalker universe, you have it.

and yes, with standard call of chernobyl i recommend plug ins and addons, however, the roadside picnic addon needs nothing, its like an all in one addon module already configured for you.

in regard to engines, generally id avise against using dx 11 iN COP, it was always buggy and didnt add anything of any note over the dx10 version, which runs better, less buggy and with better lightshafts.

Hi,

Could anyone provide information on how to use CoChernobyl and Roadside Picnic? I have the latest files from Moddb, I extracted CoC to a folder and that runs fine. However when I unpack the Roadside picnic to that folder, and overwrite 5 files, when I start the game I get the load screen then it makes a noise and windows close noise and doesn't start. Log states:

Anyone managed to get Call Of Chernobyl and Roadside Picnic working together? If so could you clarify how as no install instructions and just copying leads to the given errors?

I did get it to work, but I think I just copied the files and it started right up, though I later changed some things, like use a diffrent AI pack. Make sure you run the game at least once before you copy the RSP files over, start a new game, save and quit. This will make the program write to some files.

If that doesn't help, from the log it looks like the file the line "booster_script" directs to can't be opened or is missing. The only file with "booster" in the name I can find is "anm_drug_booster.ltx" . Might your game installation folder be read-only? Also try running as administrator.. or try downloading the roadside picnic again, maybe one of the files got corrupted.

Thank you for your post. Unfortunately not. I install GOG CoP (Downloaded latest version) to C:\MyGames, run it fine. I then extract CoC 1.4.12 to the CoP directory, then overwrite with the 1.4.16 patch, run it fine. All outside any windows folders, and just to be sure run it as Admin.
Then I extracted Roadside picnic (downloaded twice, same result) and extract over the CoC/CoP install. Game just will not start. I have even tried it not overwriting, (i.e. the launcher fsgame.ltx doesn't get overwritten, still get nothing, just the windows error noise, then it does nothing. Checked that amn_drug_booster.ltx, its size 991bytes, size on disk 4096bytes. Seems ok, not much on the web with this search an unanswered post:
http://www.moddb.com/mods/call-of-chernobyl/forum/thread/crash-at-startup1
And a post telling them to patch their game, which I have the latest version from GOG, still not starting.

Log still shows:

This right here. Call of Chernobyl is standalone. Install it in a different directory from the GOG CoP (it still needs to be installed, CoC verifies during installation and/or startup if you have a genuine copy of CoP installed.

After you have installed CoC in its own directory, launch it, start a new game, quit, copy the Roadside Picnic files over, launch again.

Yep, thats what I did before. Again, CoC loaded fine and ran no problems. As soon as Roadside Picnic was copied over then I started getting the fail and the log again. Anyways, spent too much time on this, now moved onto Hollow Knight. Thanks for your help though.

As i read your posts, it says you copied the mod over version 1.4.16 of CoC..?

it needs to be 1.4.22 version of CoC

not sure if this makes a difference, or indeed these are typos and you meant .22

Ah, that could be it. Let me check when I get home what versions I am using as really thought 1.4.16 was the latest, but your right there is a 1.4.22 patch on Moddb.
