So I bought Call of Pripyat a few days ago, booted it up, worked fine. Then I fooled around with Call of Chernobyl a bit, got rid of it, and after that didn't touch the game for a few days. Now when I try to play the vanilla game it doesn't work. Not even so much as an error message, I hit play, the button turns grey but literally nothing happens. X-Ray engine appears in task manager but other than that the game doesn't work. I've reinstalled and verified files multiple times but still nothing. I don't know what else to try.
I can confirm seeing the same problem here on Windows 10. First boot after installation is fine, but subsequent boots result in the X-ray Engine being listed in background processes in the Task Manager, but no splash screen or subsequent game start.

One interesting thing I noticed is that if you kill that task and retry opening several times, eventually it will launch (sometimes it will take 3 or 4 tries).

Steam version launches without issue..
Same problem for me. W10.
It's look like issue with GOG release. Steam verison run like a charm, but GOG version after initial launch stop working properly.
XRengine.exe just appears in Tasks bar and that's it, but as mentioned before with another member of this forum if you kill task and try it again game will launch. Sometimes it take a few tries to launch.
The game only worked on first launch, has never worked again.

HAS THIS BEEN ADDRESSED BY GOG?????
Yeah the GOG Version won't start in Dx10 or 11 as is, probably because of a windows update.
Open Xray fixed it for me though.
Try compatibility mode with Windows 95. Yes, Windows 95.
It's working for me.

Had the same problem today with Call of Pripyat on Win10 x64.
Before that, all three games in the series launched fine, although it was more than 6 month ago.

Anyway, OpenXray totally solved it for CoP. Haven't tried it on other games in the series though.
Yep, I can confirm the problem with the game apparently not running (no splash screen, game doesn't start) but cheking in task manager I found XRay running in background and I have to kill it manually because if I continue to launch the game more and more XRay instances are created.

I didn't know about OpenXRay, and it's nice that this option exists.

Anyway, my solution was simple: as I wanted a some more pleasant experience than the vanilla game, I search an installed a suitable mod (ARB mod). This solved the issue for me.

Curios about it, I look inside the mod and found many readme files (the mod itself is a carefully selected and balanced collection of other smaller mods). I see that it contains an unoffical patch for the XRay/game engine (Unofficial patch: Call of Pripyat 2.0). It also overhauls the graphic/audio compartment of the game and more while preserving the story and the spirit of the original, vanilla game.

Maybe this unofficial patch is not included in the GOG release.

If you are interested in the ARB mod you can find it here:

I just encountered this problem on Windows 10 as well. GOG should fix this.

Hi I just encountered this issue or close to it. My problem was multiple monitors. Yes, really. If your game isn't starting up and you have multiple monitors, try turning all of them but one off and then try the game again. Didn't need any compatibility mode or anything else.

this one work but your saved games are lost.
Set compatability mode to Windows XP SP3 and force DirectX 9, This should do the trick. STALKER is an old game on a janky engine that needs some tweaking.
Hello Goggers,

ive got the same problem and tried all the solutions suggested here, like downloading the xray patch and unpack it in the stalker folder, or setting the game into compatability, but nothing worked... when i try to launch the game absolutely nothing happens...

does anyone got another idea?

Edit: ok i reinstalled it and then used the xray patch...now it works fine
