Can anyone confirm if this works in WINE before I purchase?

Hey,

I (very briefly) tried getting this to run in WINE on my Mac, using Wineskin Winery. I couldn't get it to work. That said, I'm no expert and I really didn't know what I was doing.

A lot of people that know their way around WINE might be able to find the right balance of settings to get it to work, but after my very brief attempt, I came up with nothing. :(

I, too, would like to get this to work in WINE. I'm gonna keep trying things, and I've also posted in the official Spelunky forums, asking for help there.

If I make any progress, I'll post here again, but for now, I'm unsuccessful.

If anyone knows how to get this to work, please post here, as I am also looking for a WINE solution.

Hope this helps.
I was able to get the Steam version working in my default wine prefix, so it shouldn't be too hard for anyone to get it working. Looks pretty much perfect so far.

Hey,

Are you on Mac or Linux?

Can you post specifically what you did (for instance, I don't know what a wine prefix is, etc.) and I'll try to replicate with my GOG version, then I can post back here with whether it works or not.

Thanks.
A wine prefix is just a directory where a full Windows configuration is stored, including registry etc. Wine can handle many of these prefixes, and you can switch between them at will. WineSkin takes care of that stuff for you -- each wine bottle includes a version of wine, a wine prefix, and an installed game.

I'm running on a mac with wine 1.6-rc5. All that is needed to get spelunky working is d3dx9, which can be done using winetricks (a wine support utility that installs windows components). From wineskin, you should be able to create a wine bottle, then go to advanced options and choose winetricks, select d3dx9, and that should do the trick.
OK I just tested using wineskin:

- Downloaded the latest wineskin, updated everything,
- Created a new wrapper.
- Chose to copy the Spelunky directory into the wrapper.
- Chose 'tools', 'winetricks', 'd3dx9'.
- Once it was done I just ran the game.

This works well!

However, it won't work with my controller (Xbox 360 wired). If you've had any luck with your controller and can help me out, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks for all you've done so far, too. It's really great to be able to just launch Spelunky like any other game. :)
I installed it in PlayOnLinux on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS - with wine 1.6 32bit and d3dx9_43 it works perfectly!
