I'm running this game on a netbook, with windows 7. Initially, the game did not work for me, as it closed itself after I tried to run it. The issue was the incompatible starting screen resolution. The following is a small work-around for any who run into this issue.

Open the cfg.txt file in your SR2 directory. Find these 2 lines and make the following changes:

VideoMode=R1
RobotResolution= 800,600
Just wanted to say thank you for the post man, I too am running this on a net book, and initially could not run it. I changed those settings and it runs fantastic. No slow down, no nothing. Just awesome game play. I can't thank you enough, and only hope more gaming enthusiasts on the go or deployed like me read this!

Thank you for this info. I am pretty computer illiterate, but your explanation for fixing this game worked perfectly. It is weird to me that opening what appeared to be a notebook page and rewriting some things actually fixed the game, ha.

It's actually quite common... the game reads the text file to determine which settings it should launch with. If one of those settings prevents the game from launching properly, then the user can simply edit the text file to change the initial settings. In this case, the game's default resolution is too high for most netbook screens, but you can set a lower one in the text file to get the game to run.
Good advice....can't see robot resolution though

Robot resolution will only affect the robot planetary battle sections of the game. If you can change VideoMode and set it to R1, this should allow the game to launch. Once it's launched, you can try using the in-game settings menu to change the resolution of the robot battles.

If you are still unable to set the robot battle resolution, and if the game crashes when you try to do one of those missions, then you can actually ignore them and just play the base game, although that's not ideal.

I think there are some other threads with discussions of how to fix the robot battles, so looking through the forum wouldn't hurt.

Great! Have you tried any robot battles yet? Do those work?

Just lost my first game....great. What is a robot battle, haven't had one nor seen anything about it in the manual...

PS: i am actually running SR 1 so maybe it was introduced in SR2?

If I understood the term right you should experience your robot battle for the first time in a mission of the nearest planet. I really like this part of the game and I'm looking forward to some nice fights against the dominators. :)

Yeah robot battles are only in the second game. I thought that's the one you were playing. No worries though, SR1 is also great!

When i first posted, i hadn't realised that this thread was about SR2 but the problem solution was the same (except for the robot battles). I think i will get SR2 at some point but now i am already fairly busy with SR1.

Thanks again
