So has anyone played this before? If so, how is it? I really liked Freelancer and it seems like that kind of a game, only on a top down perspective. Is it worth the ten bucks to play it?
I acquired the sequel on Steam. It kind of reminded me of both Sid Meier's Pirates and Port Royale, but in Space, with different typesof gameplay. Liked every type except RTS, which is optional.

If it is like the sequel, I would say it is worth it. Open ended, and you have the option to be pretty much whatever you want to be, andpretty fun.

Again, that applies to the sequel.
So how does combat work? Is it turn based, or is it more point-n-click to shoot? Because I see people saying turn-based, but the GoG description says it's action-RPG, and I'm having trouble finding anything that describes how the actual combat works.

Also, how difficult is the game?
I've only played the sequel, so I don't know if the first one was the same, but the combat was turn-based, with the turns running continuously unless you pause it or certain other things happen. In other words, it flowed like real time, but there were turns ticking away below the hood, so to speak.
Sort of like Buldur's Gate then, with 'dice rolls' determining hits and misses, but without any breaks in the action, 'end turn' stuff? Gotcha.

So then, does maneuvering factor in at all, or do the two ships just sit across from each other firing?
Hello,

Here is a link to a review of the original Space Rangers by Kieron Gillen, formerly a member of Rock, Paper, Shotgun (although this review is on Eurogamer):

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/r_spacerangers_pc

Apparently most other places didn't bother reviewing it because it was a bit low-budget, but Kieron liked it a lot and his review should give you a good sense of it.

I can also say that it was by the same people who made King's Bounty: The Legend, which is also available here on GOG, and apparently these two titles share a quirky sense of humor, which I always like in games (I haven't actually gotten around to playing either game myself yet though).

EDIT: In the review Kieron notes that there's some confusion about the numberings of the games, suggesting that the one he reviewed is actually the second one, but was released world-wide as simply "Space Rangers". I am almost certain that it is the same game that is for sale here on GOG (the same screenshots show up), but I'm not sure whether all those who keep mentioning "Space Rangers 2" are actually thinking of THIS game. Anyone know the full story?

I don't have much to add besides the fact that I really like Space Rangers 2.

That's interesting. If I understand you correctly, there is a chance that the game being sold here on GoG is, actually, what is sometimes referred to around the net as Space Rangers 2? Because I searched for a demo for this game and only saw a demo for Space Rangers 2 floating around.
No, this is definitely not Space Rangers 2. I have beaten that game, but the screenshots from this game show something similar but definitely different.

And no, the ships, at least in the sequel do not just sit still in combat unless you order them to. By default, they weave, dodge and move all over the place. Sometimes that can be a bad thing and you want to manually order them to move while firing.

EDIT: judging from the screen shots, combat is basically identical between the two games, aside from some interface changes and perhaps different weapons and components you can use.

The peaceful solution to this game is canon in the second, by the way.

Does Space Rangers 1 have the text adventures? I thought that was one of the silliest things in Space Rangers 2: Reboot.

Speaking of that I should play SR2 more. (And yay for it being like 5 bucks on Steam when I got it.)

Yes.
"I’d say that it’s another game to make this the year where non-sequels are where all the real action is, except it’s actually Space Rangers 2 and only called 'Space Rangers' as the first wasn’t properly available in the west. However, that’s also included on the CD as a freebie, meaning that it adds unbeatable value to its other attractive attributes."
(That's from a review someone posted a link to above.) Can someone clarify this some? What exactly is the content of the GOG download?
Perhaps this post from Rock, Paper, Shotgun will clarify a little?

This seems to suggest that Space Rangers 2: Reboot was actually an updated and improved version of the Space Rangers we see here on GOG. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Anyway, the review I posted earlier has the same screenshots as this GOG release so one can probably take that as a good indication of what the game is like. I'll probably be picking this one up soon.
Isn't Space Rangers 2: Reboot an updated and expanded version of the original Space Rangers 2?

I bought space rangers 2 (don't remember wether or not it was caller just SR or SR2, can't find the box) at the time of the release and it contained SR1 as well. As far as I know, it was a commercial failure at the time (only earning success in Finland and some east european countries) and Reboot expansion was developed and released in russia but due to commercial failure they lacked funds or funder for translating it. English release of the Reboot expansion finally came to be only few years back and AFAIK only Impulse sells it separately.

I just found out that there seems to be uncommercial addon for SR2 Reboot known as "Space rangers 2: Revolution". Unfortunately for russian Reboot only :-(.

Here is a copy of description (the person posting it used tranlation tool. Anyone know Russian and could provide better translation?) :

"Revolution" is the first scale noncommercial addon to "to Space Rangers 2 Reboot" which was issued.

http://snk-games.ru/revolution.htm

In the second part of game «Space Rangers» addon adds:
• Unique scripting situations which, certainly, do game even more interesting and насыщеннее (to read more low).
• the Additional equipment with unique characteristics.
• 42 new micromodules separate from which can be installed only on доминаторское the equipment.
• Text quests and cards of planetary and arcadian fights (43 new cards of planetary fights, from them 6 demonstration + 5 new Ab-cards).

The set of the new scripting situations arising under certain conditions is added:
• there Will be a voting possibility on choices. Very interesting situation, but is better to see and participate once, than to listen to hundreds enthusiastic responses.
• the Pulling down especially malicious pirates of military basis. On protection ВБ is mandatory there will arrive fleet of military fighters.
• to the Player the choice in the history about experiments on НБ "Annihilations" is given — to participate or to refuse.
• Generation to computer rangers of artifacts of times in 1-3 years.
• Destruction of the annoying creditor in the name of Business center the ranger-debtor with the help кварковых bombs.
• Talks of computer dealers about purchase of drugs, and, actually, purchase and sale of the dangerous goods.
• And still a heap of cheerful and original jobs, adventures and innovations which impatiently wait you in аддоне.

The added scripts have made free world КР even more independently, rangers began to be engaged more actively in the direct duties, and with that the competition has grown also, the real struggle for a post of the Messiah of space has begun. Fuss of casual pirates was enveloped by the organized crimes; space преврался in the huge spontaneous market in which there are no rules and manuals as soon as thirst of a profit and the power — and as, it is asked, not to sink in riches of a choice and not to forget about a chief goal of the ranger — pravdoju-nepravdoju to destroy crowds of arriving aggressors.

Addon it is finite only for the Russian version of game, but can ктото will want to play in SR in Russian =) for the sake of all these innovations)
