I'm having a hard time killing pirates. I don't know how many times I've talked 5 friendly ships into ganging up on a relatively weak pirate just to have the pirate land on a planet at 50 hull or hyperspace out... And I've been playing on Easy. Every time I see a pirate hunter mission, I turn it down.
Pirate hunting missions are a pain in the ass, but you can complete them. You just need to give yourself a lot of time (forget the hard versions of them).

When you attack a pirate they will (if you're stronger) run for a planet to land on. If you can't kill them before they reach it, prepare to spend the next month having them take off, land next turn and repair damage, repeat.

Eventually however they will take off and try to flee (perhaps it actually tracks their bank balance for repairs? no idea) and that's when you can kill them.

So if you have plenty of time and a decent ship (and lots of patience) pirate hunting is not too hard to complete.

Huh, wow. Sounds like a real pain. Then again, it would be pretty satisfying to be rid of them. But are they auto-replaced, or can you really kill them all (or at least faster than they respawn)?

I've noticed that if you watch where they flee to (look for the text over the portal), you can go the same place and they'll be right there, and not that far ahead of you. Of course, they may or may not be close to a planet...

If you radio for assistance, and someone else puts in the coup de grace, I assume you still get the credit for completing the quest?

Yes. I had a pirate hunting quest which was completed before I got anywhere near the system the pirate was in. Someone else butchered him, I got paid :D
Hi Space Friends! Happy New Year!
I've read your exhaustive replies, congratulations you are Real Space Rangers!
I've restarted the game in easy mode, because this game is very hard! But also very good!
I've a question: klissans take possession of planets during the game..... if I can't kick them out 'couse my weakness, they invade all systems and the game ends? In easy mode military ships of planets are able to kick them out by thmselves?
Thanks,
bye

Yeah, the game is a dynamic world. The military forces of the various races will retake systems on their own, however they will end up slowly losing without your help. If it's like the second game, this will take a long time before it gets to be a real problem, so you can safely ignore it for a time while you improve your ship and skills.
Thanks! It's difficult out there!!!

That's cool. It sort of makes me think that there should be an MMO version of the game, but I'm sure the balancing challenges would be immense. The turn-based dynamics would have to be changed to real time and slowed down by a factor of two or three, I would think. Ah, well. It's pretty fun and feels vaguely multiplayerish as it is.
Hi all!
I have a question: when a pirate who hates merchants says to you to abbandon your state of merchant, if you say yes, what happen then? Can you pretend to abbandon your life of merchant and continue trading? If those pirates meet you again?
Thanks,
bye!

I'm pretty sure you can keep trading, but if you run into that pirate again he'll probably attack you without giving you a second chance, once he sees you didn't give it up after all.

Anyone know for sure?
Thanks Waltorious! Now I'm not strong enough to kick pirate's ass.......!!!!!!

If you do get attacked, you can often radio other ships and ask them to help you out.
This game is very cool! When I start playing I can't stop! Last night I put my eyes on a 570 hull (now I'm 502) in a Ranger base but I hadn't enough money. So I started trading and doing missions to achieve the sum of money but.... when I returned to base there was no more!
The equipment is generated randomly, isn't it?

Yeah, it seems to be. My best advice is, if you are thinking of an expensive upgrade like that, just make some money and try to hold on to it, because you're bound to see something similar again eventually.
Hi all!
Life is very difficult out there! Now i'm trying to participate to many battles as possible against klissans, to help planets and races, to collect protoplasm. I hope to resist, not to allow klissans to expand unpunished.
A little question now: what is the little brown cross that appears near planets? What does it indicate?
Thanks Rangers!
