Hey All,
I'm considering picking up the Space Quest set but I was first wondering if anyone could give me a sense of the difficulty of these games first. I played alot of adventure games years ago and found that many of them had a difficulty level that bordered on "cheap". Kings Quest V comes to mind where you had to save items for specific encounters. If you happened to use them for another specific encounter which wasnt the one expressly meant for that item you were.....screwed. Ok...I admit it...I fed the damned pie to the bird(he looked hungry).
So......is it like that or are its puzzles based more in logic than trial and error? I'm looking for a few adventure games that I can play on my netbook when the kids give me a free moment.
What do you think?

Space Quest games have great style and roger wilco is awesome but just like the kings quest games they have the same dead ends and problems. If you use something when your not meant to or don't pick something up you need later your screwed and have to reload which makes it really quite hard on first play through.
If you haven't played beneath a steel sky yet or simon the sorcerer games they are good point and clicks in the same set as lucasarts adventures where you can't die and you can't run into a dead end.

Yea your right, I don't know why I said you can't for beneath a steel sky. The puzzles are alot more forgiving though.
The "Space Quest" games are more fair and have fewer absurd puzzles than the "King's Quest" games. I'd recommend the remakes of the first 2 games over the originals though. The remakes are easier than the originals, but not too easy by any means. The remakes removed the text parser, which means you don't have to think to type any absurd things. There are a couple of VERY absurd things you must type in the first 2 games that you won't think to type without a hint book. Lastly, there's a really hard maze in the original "Space Quest 2" that was removed in the remake. You can get the SQ2 remake for free from the Infamous Adventures website. I don't know where you can get the SQ1 remake nowadays, you'll have to look.

With the remakes, I'd say the "Space Quest" games overall are not too hard. They are not easy (no good adventure game is), but most of them are not too bad. "Space Quest 3" and "Space Quest 6" are really hard though

Maybe it's a matter of perspective, but I played the original SQ1 & SQ2 and never thought they were all that difficult. I didn't need a hint book to figure out what to type. And the "maze" in sq2 is pretty straight forward. Any regular adventure player would have it figured out in about 5 minutes. I played these games when I was about 10-12 years old and recently replayed them without to much effort. I don't like the point and click as much, because I feel it dummies down the games. You pretty much have a limited amount of things to try. And eventually you can just solve it by luck

I realize there are 2 mazes in SQ2. I was referring to the root monster maze. The problem with that maze isn't figuring it out. Figuring it out isn't too hard. But, there's figuring it out, and then there's executing. One tiny little misstep and you're dead. The underground maze wasn't too hard once I learned to "put gem in mouth."
