I have played this game before and managed to get it working somehow ( cannot remember how) but after some months of inactivity and due to my laptop crashing, I had to install it again and now it will not let me get to the main game menu...The first menu which has the only useful button "play" will start loading the game and at bottom I can see all the buttons,like: start new game, load saved game, game settings etc etc However, when the loading reaches 100% the game will freeze ( the buttons at the bottom of the screen will not respond-they are greyed out) but I can move my mouse cursor around...I tried win98 and winXP compatability but same result every time. I have win7 Home Premium.
Does anyone have any solutions? Thank you!

Did you install it in Program files (86)? Bad idea, create a completely different one.
Did you add it to this stupid Win7 exception list (can't remember the name, DDM, DRm, something like this)
Did you install directx9.0c? (doesn't really sound like a problem with directx, but who know ;) )

And you do not get any error message at all????

Did you run it as admin?

Do you use the short cut or trying to execute the exe itself?

Thank you for your reply. The problem was not any of the above you mentioned but the stupid : CD Music setting which I changed to `False` and it fixed the problem! Now I can play it but there is no background music...no big deal! Thanks anyway!

ok, I would have never guessed this one ;)
But good to hear that you can enjoy it again.
You know the music is stored in:
GOGGames\Space Empires 4 Deluxe\music

normal mp3.
