This is probably a very basic question but I bought Soma for my Mac.
Downloaded soma_2.5.0.8.dmg and....
patch_soma_5_8.pkg and then....
soma_4_5.pkg and then....

Opened up the original 2.5.0.8 and dragged it to my applications folder then my Mac said something to the effect of "This thing is damaged. Time to throw it away". Which it did.

So, what should I have done? I very very rarely buy games for my Mac so I don't know anything about these "patch" things. It's kind of an experiment as I was hoping the developers would get a better cut of the $ from GOG versus the Apple App Store so can you help out this newb?

Often this is a corrupt/incomplete download. Try downloading it again. Ideally you would have checked the file hash to compare it to the fresh download, e.g.:
$ md5 soma_2.5.0.8.dmg
If it does it again, despite the error message try:
Game "can't be opened because it was not downloaded from the Mac App Store" error message
a) System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> unlock to make changes -> select Mac App Store and identified developers.
or
b) Right-click (or cmd-click) the game -> Open -> confirm Open.

Also, the DMG may be fully updated already. I don't own this one so I'm not entirely certain.
