Will the GOG release feature the original game's Starforce copy protection?
This question / problem has been solved by Tirpitzimage
"You buy it, you keep it.
Don't let your DRMs turn into nightmares (clever, no?). You won't find any intrusive copy protection in our games; we hate draconian DRM schemes just as much as you do, so at GOG.com you don't just buy the game, you actually own it. Once you download a game, you can install it on any PC and re-download it whenever you want, as many times as you need, and you can play it without an internet connection."
In short: no ******* Starforce ;) No stupid SecuROM. No bloody DRM at all! Because legal users are not pirates!
This company has put it's faith in us, we should put our faith in them in return. I really hope idiots don't abuse this system and spoil it for the rest of us (the 99%!)!!!

GustavusAdolphus: Will the GOG release feature the original game's Starforce copy protection?

If you click through the games on the top banner of the main page of GOG.com, you will reach the Soldiers banner, and it explicitly says "100% DRM free", so I reckon that's another big hint towards a Starforce-free version.
No DRM in any game they sell ever! How refreshing! :o)
Knowing that there is no hidden software that is going to install on your system is simply wonderful.
Please, support gog.com by buying games and keep No DRM alive, thriving and well for a long time to come.
Can you tell I like gog! :o)
Now we have the DRM out of the way - let me just say, this is a brilliant game! But yes, of course - hardly known!!!! :)

To quote the GOG.com EULA that you must agree to before you can install a game:
"This Program is licensed, not sold, for your personal, non-commercial use. Your license confers no title or ownership in this Program and should not be construed as any sale of any rights in this Program."
These games may be DRM free but you definitely don't own them
Starforce was the whole reason I didn't buy this game, but now at a cheaper price and no DRM I am more then happy to buy it. I love you GOG

Technically you've never owned any software you have purchased. The EULA for every piece of software I've even seen just licenses you to use the software and doesn't give you any ownership.

Are you kidding? You can buy the actual disc for this game for what GOG is charging, but I bought it from GOG specifically because of the EULA. Thank's to GOG, I can legally install this stuff on my kids machines and we can play multiplayer. GOG is costing me way, WAY more than I ever planned on.

Ditto. I could buy a boxed set for $5, but I bought the GOG version specifically because it is DRM and restriction free. By 'you own it' they mean you can useyour game as you see fit without restrictions (for personal use). The bit about 'a license' in the EULA is a legal fiction carried forward (probably forever) because the legal suits insist it be so. But, essentially, they are correct, you own it, you can copy it to as many of your computers as you like. Back it up, archive it, no malware, no muss, no fuss.
The GOG approach is refreshing and is why I will continue to buy titles here, even though I could get them elsewhere cheaper.

I really love the DRM-free digital distribution system. Can't wait to buy Fallout 1 & 2!!
I already have this game and can play it without Starforce getting installed because there is a crack to remove it available. Wish I could find one for Space Rangers2. Bought that game without knowing the Cinemaware version I bought even had Starforce. It's a good game otherwise.

I know you were not suggesting buying it again, but.
space rangers 2 $20

space rangers 2 with the expansion $30 (note the expansion is $20 alone)

impulse are the only other vendor I know of who is drm free.
Nowhere near as cheap as gog, but they deal in newer titles.
I'm very glad both exist.

Actually, Impulse has recently announced that, if the game's maker insists on it, the Impulse version WILL also include the DRM.
