I just installed and tested the newly released SimCity 4 Deluxe in Wine. (version 1.4.1, Debian Wheezy) For some reason, the game is *really* broken when running in full screen. However, running it in window mode (found a window mode shortcut in the game's Start Menu folder) seemed to work okay. Music, sound, gameplay, graphics/resolution settings - just about everything. Was able to complete the Getting Started tutorial without any problems.

If anyone else has tested/wants to test this GOG version of the game in Wine or Crossover, go ahead and post your results/tips & tricks/whatever here! (They likely vary depending on the version of Wine [and hardware] you're using)

Tested in both hardware rendering and software rendering modes. The latter makes the game real choppy, so the former works best.

Haven't played the game very much yet, so I'll update this post later if I run into a snag or two. Also may test with plugins/patches in the future.

EDIT: bah, I keep calling it SimCity 4000 instead of just SimCity 4... how silly of me :P

Did you try the newest Wine? You can install it with PlayOnLinux (it would handle Wine version independently from Debian repos).

I'd be interested in buying the game, but if it's broken - not so much.

Full screen loads, but is unplayable. Menus are completely messed up.

Windowed crashed without loading.

Basically unplayable. This is on 1.7.18 Wine, in Linux Mint 16. I know Wine itself works, because I've played Might and Magic VI in it before, and have played Dungeons and Dragons Online several times in it.

Are there any apparent errors in the log?

It runs fine in wine 1.7.19 (Archlinux package). Installed in its own prefix, running with options "-intro:off -CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32". Either "windowed" or not, but I'm using xmonad and in any case I get a "window" that I move&resize to fill the screen. Not using any compositing manager. And GPU is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670, with proprietary drivers 337.19.

Definitely use the latest version, 1.7.19. I haven't played extensively, only did the first tutorial as a test. But it ran without any problems or crashes in full screen. I tested both software and hardware rendering modes, both worked. For me, software mode performed better but it also doesn't look as good, even at max settings. I used the "-CPUCount:1" option and also the custom resolution command line option to make it widescreen.

I'm using an old Macbook Pro so I spent a good 40 minutes testing various graphics options to see what was a good ratio of looks and performance. Again, software mode at max settings was smoother, but did not look as nice, especially the texture quality and shadows (they are just circular blobs). Using hardware mode with some settings set to medium (building draw speed, shadows, # of sims/cars) seemed to be a good compromise. Might have to change these options again when dealing with a large city. I only was using the tiny city you build in the first tutorial.

EDIT: I was wrong about the texture quality between software and hardware. I loaded a big city from a region I downloaded and the quality is the same. The part above about the shadows is true though. And I was right about the graphical settings, loading a big city in hardware mode started to chug. I switched to software and turned down the same three settings above to make it go smoother. There was still some choppyness though when moving between different zoom levels. This probably just applies to me since I'm sure most people here are using something better than a 6 year old laptop.

EDIT 2: Thanks to this thread, I found out there is an option to set the game to use OpenGL. The increased performance was quite noticeable when using the big city I downloaded.

Same thing here. Just installed it in Wine 1.7.19 and started the game (fullscreen mode). No issues so far. I didn't test it extensively though.

Working fine for me too in OpenSUSE 13.1, Wine 1.6-something (playonlinux), full hd resolution.

Sound doesn't work at all though if pavucontrol is not open before launching the game. If pavucontrol is running, all is well.

When creating an entry in Wine AppDB you should put the GOG version in the table, as well as internal version of the binary. That helps identifying similarities, since GOG can change its version and binary version internally as well.

I recently bought a new computer (ThinkPad W500) and I've got both Debian Jessie (Wine 1.6x) and Arch Linux (Wine 1.7x) dual booting, so I'll have to submit new test results for this game.
