This question has been answered plenty of times around the forum. Basically, the win version was unstable, even more on recent versions of Windows.

Dos one, on the other hand, runs perfectly through Dos Box.

Curious; I did not find the question in the forums.

However, I've found the Win95 version, once installed, to be more stable, if not even more user friendly, than the DOSbox workaround.

All you have to do is a workaround with the registry keys and import the correct directory paths. Granted, I know this is not something your average customer can do.

Just my two cents.

Also, I'm runnin' Win7 x64, no problems.

Hum... I haven't tried it myself, so I wouldn't know. But good to hear that it actually works. :)
I was wondering the same thing, I also have the Win95 version running neatly in compatibility mode on XP x64, much smoother than the DOS version, much higher music and interface quality, higher resolution... The only thing keeping it from being easily installed is the 16-bit installer, seems like a new installer would be an easy way to get around that... At least offer it as an extra so people have the DOS Box version if it does give them trouble.
The problem with the windows version of Simcity 2000 is that on Windows 7 the save and open dialogs don't work and it just crashes I think.

It works fine on XP and Vista I think though.

However someone did write a patch and it seems to work fine on Windows 7 after that
