Right, so after many attempts I got the timing on the puzzle. What is meant to happen is every time you input the right sequence, David nods to confirm this. So you ring 3 times in quick succession and he nods. Now, according to the person in the tavern (Incidentally, you cannot skip the Vivianne meeting even if you do know the sequence since David won't confirm the sequence) he says:
Ring 3 times, then wait a second.
Ring 2 times, then wait a second.
Finally, ring once and the gate should open.
GoG haven't quite nailed this, but it is possible to do. What you have to do is:

Once David nods his head to confirm the sequence, take note of how quickly he nods his head, it will bob up and down about three times. As soon as his head bounces up the first time, ring twice and he will nod again, repeat to complete the sequence and open the gate.

So, the 1 second wait is reduced to a 0.1 second wait. :S
You're my hero. All the kudos.
for me it was pretty much just keep ringing it perfectly, that 0.1 second... :D

Oh pssh, stop it you :3 I'm just amazed that it actually solved, I remember a time long ago when my brother had his old Vista laptop and was playing Silver, he was frantically trying to solve the puzzle to no avail. I stepped in and solved it on my first try.
I see that some people have already mentioned this, but you're awesome dude! Thanks for helping me and others to continue on the epic journey that is Silver :)

Worked like a charm after a few tries! Although the wait is shorter, it is definetely doable without resorting to a workaround on newer systems.
yeah the best way is to pass the bell is to play it on a really slow shitty computer that can bearly run this game and transfer the save file
Hello! Thanks for the post, but I give up on trying to solve this "bug?" / puzzle, I just can't do it!!! Is there any chance that someone can send me any savegame right after this bell puzzle? Thank yo SO MUCH!! :D

Hang in there :P

When you see David nod, you can press the bell again. It takes a few tries but otherwise it works fine. Try it again :P
If you have the chance try to solve the puzzle on different computers. That helped me. Might as well play the trick for you too. You can play GoG Silver from any portable flash media.

And again, if the character you're ringing the bell doesn't nod after the first three rings (or the other sequences) - you didn't do it right.
If nothing else works for you, download the "save anytime" program elsewhere in this forum, save when at the bell, reload and the gate will be open.
For me David never nods, not even after the first three rings.

Tried the following, without success.
- Spires Order from Gno -> Albert -> Bell
- Before the Ice Orb -> Albert -> Bell
- Ringing very slowly
- Mashing the mouse button
- Above with and without CPU-Killer

No nodding, ever.

Don't wanna cheat my way through with "save anytime", so this goes to gog:
Please fix this issue. I was so happy someone repaired this great game, please don't stop here.
