Yes, really. I've equipped it and done that to no effect

You have to equip your desired special skill at the context menu first. To finally use it, just hold your left mouse button for a few seconds. No need for anything else. Beware that every special attack needs to recharge after you used it. This is definately working, I tried that several times.

As said before, hold your attack button for a second, it will work

Keeping CTRL pressed is useful only for spells, as otherwise choosing your target can be difficult

After improving up the spheres, pressing the number over the letters, (number above WASD or what you have), permit to change the strength of the attack, and thus the mana cost, this function too is easy to overlook
