I know some unofficial patches can fix this, but I'd like to know if GoG could give us the option to keep the original aspect ratio.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with the release and I know that GoG did a good job here, but still, for purists like me, this option is very important.

Thanks a lot,folks.

Even the fanpatch will cause downgrade of the shader ingame. So I doubt they will Add the feature anyway.

It can be implemented as extra option like all those fan patches did. It's just a matter of preference, I'm just asking for the ability to choose. To be honest, I don't care about shading effects.
Which way should I be setting the resolution to play in 4:3 at HD? I see 1280x960 is the highest 4:3 resolution in the DirectX settings, but ingame there's only 1024x768...

Also why no 1440x1080?

What's you're screen's native resolution?
Have you made a custom 4:3 variant in Windows?

So make a 1440x1080 custom resolution and check dxcfg.exe again.
For me, it's showing 1920x1440 (1440P).

Oh, so that's how it works? Does the in-game resolution under options not matter then?

For me, dxcfg.exe is set as Same as Desktop and in-game is set as 2560x1440.
I just know that the more 'exotic' resolutions can be found in that dxcfg program.

So it solved your problem?

Yes, I believe so. Thank you. I had to do the custom resolution through the NVIDIA Control Panel rather than the "right click on desktop->display settings" option I'm used to using. Seems only 1440x900 was accepted for some reason. But the resolution did change to 4:3 and 1440x1080 showed up in dxcfg.exe. I'm not sure I can tell if the game itself is truly running at that; although it doesn't look low resolution to my eye, the in-game resolution still says 1024x768. I'll just assume that doesn't matter and dxcfg.exe takes priority.

Again, thank you for your help.

I know, in more modern games, non-native resolution is easier to spot - some aspects just look more "fuzzy". Not so much in this game... and the fact that UI-elements are low resolution bitmaps doesn't help.
I don't see much difference (short impression) between 2560x1440 and 1920x1080, but when selecting 1024x768 I definitely see it.

For example: Neverwinter Nights (older, I think): Non native resolution was clearly visible. Before the enhanced version I had to lower the resolution because the UI elements were just too small.
I never played the original SH4 PC release, but I assume that UI scaling is part of the widescreen/resolution fix that GOG implemented.

I am actually interested in making the game render at 1440x1080 as well (that's how I run 4:3 games on a 16:9 1080p monitor most of the times). The problem is the game renders at whatever resolution is set in game options and not what you set in dxcfg.exe (in fact I am not really sure what does setting different resolution options in that tool do at all).

I have tried to find any resolution related values in SILENT HILL 4.exe with hex editor, but sadly I couldn't find any. :(

If somebody will find a way to make the game run in custom 4:3 resolution please let us know!
