Since updating to Win 11 24H2, I have been encountering 2 issues. One is the virtual memory error as outlined by others. The other issue is that when it does work, it forces multiplayer even if I select single player. Same issue in both SMAC and SMAX, and only since updating Windows.
Also just updated to 24H2... Haven't had the virtual memory error, but it forces multiplayer when I am playing single-player.
Original Alpha Centauri works fine though.

Dinesy43: I have a laptop running windows 11.
Windows update forced me to install Version 24H2.
I can run SMAC but when it writes to disc (autosave) it crashes with FATAL ERROR message and tells me to increase my Virtual memory to 128MB. Current configuration is 24576MB.
Terranx.exe is running in XP compatability mode.
Everything worked before the update.
Any patches that will fix this appreciated.
this is how i setup and order it, i only play alien crossfire, not regular alpha centauri. and i got the planetary pack on steam not gog but i dont think its any different.

i installed in this order
game from steam
smacp4e patch
smacxpv2 patch
smac_win2000_xp_compatable_update_v1_03f
unofficial SMACX Sound Effects fix-2-1-0
Yitzi 3.5 patch (alphax needed renamed to Alphax, note capital
yitzi 3.5d executable
pracx.v1.11.exe

enabled PRACX in "alpha centauri.ini' disabled forced old voxel algorithm, set screen width to 1024. otherwise movies were broken.

When are we going to get a fix? It's on GOG's preservation program...
I have had the same problems mentioned here with Alpha Centauri and sometimes manage to get the virtual memory error.

A recommended patch stopped it from shutting down but caused a problem I found with other versions of the game (I only play Alien Crossfire) where it starts but immediately says the sea levels are rising. It keeps saying that every turn (which is a pain) and that's all it does.

For the virtual memory fault, I have managed to stop this from occurring with changes to the virtual memory settings. But then it defaults to the sea level rising problem.

On one computer I've managed to back out of 24H2 and the game works normally again. But on my laptop I cannot do this and would have to re-install yet again.

I'd be interested in any changes that anyone has managed to implement to fix parts of the problem to see if I can work out whether anything such as patches, config changes etc.at least fixes part of the issue.

Dinesy43: The original SMAC works on Windows 11 version 24H2.
The Crossfire expansion is the game that crashes.
Yes true. But, I also found that the other versions available suffer a repeated sea level rising problem.

Some available patches also cause the sea level rising problem too.

I've tried to find fixes but it's not proving easy. If I find anything, I'll post it here though I would like GOG to fix it.

I have the same two problems as others.

Alien Crossfire does run in a virtual machine. But on my rig anyway that seems to be painfully slow.

[EDIT] It runs beautifully in a Windows XP Virtual Machine under VirtualBox. However the new Windows Sandbox feature in 24H2 killed the performance of this virtual machine for me. Once I turned off Windows Sandbox, I again get near native performance in my VM -- Windows Sandbox turns on a subset of Hyper-V which is known to interfere with VirtualBox VMs.

I can work around the virtual memory crash by starting a new game in a virtual machine, saving, then opening this save on my desktop. However then I get forced into multiplayer mode.

Since MS changed the WOW64 emulator in 24h2, likely the easiest fix would be to figure out how to run thru Wine on Windows -- the same fix that enabled 16 bit apps to run on 64 bit Windows. https://github.com/otya128/winevdm However the 0.9.0 version of winevdm won't run terranx -- it says its a 32 bit app already. [EDIT] Or port Proton to Windows as it works great under Proton in Linux.
