AaronAsh: It's also important to run the game in administrator mode - the "DirectDraw=0" only worked for me when I ran the game as an administrator - it also allowed the game to populate the ini file with lots of settings it did not previously contain, so might be worth doing even if you do not want widescreen.
EDIT: I should add though that when I have widescreen mode enabled the game crashes whenever I scroll to the bottom edge of the map, which is a shame.
I wonder if it's just oddball resolutions that cause the game to crash. I had the same issue on my laptop @ 1366x768 resolution. I changed the resolution of my display to 1280x720 (i.e. 720p, one of the common resolutions w/16:9 aspect ratio), then the game does not crash. Strangely, the game's load/title screen has lines across it, but it's not an issue while playing the game and the game no longer crashes.
