Are they two seperate games or is one vanilla and AX is the updated version?

One is the main game, the other is the expansion which features 7 new factions, more technologies & secret projects, a new victory condition among other things. The best part is that if you don't like the new factions, you may play Alien Crossfire without them, but with all the additions that the expansion offers.
