You may need to check your default settings that clicking on a unit does not cancel its orders.

Well unlike allot of modern games, smac actually has ALLOT of options for altering UI responses and behavior to suit you. However, if you changed no other setting, there is one default setting highly recommended to change.... you want it to pause at end of turn, OBVIOUSLY because you definitely want to be in charge of when to end turn.

As for your specific problem, i just loaded an old game of crossfire and had a look.

If i left click on the unit a popup comes with several options, the default is 'never mind' which means don't change the units orders at all. This popup also shows the number of turns the former has to go on its project.

Alternatively if i right click on the unit, it gives me a list of options, the key one at the top is 'move cursor here', this is very handy, you can get a full report on that unit, what it is doing, how many turns remaining and the terrain without disturbing the unit.

if your giving the multiple former order such as build farm road mine, then it wont tell you the overall time to completion, only the section it is working on now, and if it just completed that section this turn and has not started the next section yet, then i assume it wont tell you anything in that instance?

Also foreign units and or mind worms spotted will cancel former orders, you can probably change that in settings but i don't mind keeping that on, it comes in handy since with my bad memory, i often forget an approaching mind worm Then the former drags my dumbass back asking for new orders.
