Hi, new player here. I've read about pop booming on some AC forums and I've had several attempts at it, however the results were unsuccessful. I know the basic requirements, i.e. Growth +6 and enough nutrients for a new +1 population. My questions are:
1. Does the extra nutrients have to be exactly +2 or can it be more?
2. Do you have to have extra nutrients in all of your cities as oppose to having them only in a couple and then pop booming in those cities respectively?
What you are looking for early on in the game are 'nutrient' resource bonuses and then plant a forrest on it ASAP, Monoliths are ok too. Find these to guide you to where to found good strong cities.

If your ok with reloading, whenever you find pods in locations that look good to found a city, save the game before activating the pod and then activate it repeatedly until you get a nutrient bonus, but usually a monolith is more common, which is ok, but not as good as a nutrient bonus.

Going forward you want to try to get supply crawler technology ASAP and use those to collect nutrients for boosting growth even further, and also for energy and production. but most significantly, supply crawlers are the key to early military expansion because they can offset unit support costs.
Yeah I know the stuff about terraforming, I was just wondering what are the specific requirements for the pop boom to occur. Do you need to fulfill those requirements globally or just locally in a couple of cities where you want the pop boom to happen?

Like in one game I was playing Lal, I had Democratic/Planned for Growth +4, Children's Creches everywhere to pump the growth to +6 and I had surplus nutrients in my cities (somewhere only +1 though) and I did not pop boom which led me to believe that you need to have +2 or more surplus nutrients in ALL of your cities. But then I played another game, again Lal, and I did pop boom (even got the message), but only in a single city which sort of contradicts the +2 nutrients everywhere idea.

Then I played Morgan I went with +2 growth from social engineering +2 from Creches and +2 from Golden Age and I did not pop boom. But later on i googled that Golden Age pop booming doesn't work in SMAC, only in SMAX and I was playing the original game, not expansion. So at least that's settled.

But thanks anyway, I didn't know that what you get from pods changes on reloads, I thought it's predetermined.

I have long suspected there is 'some' element of pre determination in that some pods will 'never' give you a nutrient bonus no matter how many times you reload.

because each pod is assigned 1 of about 3 prize pools and there will be some unique items (nutrients, technology) in each prize pool that never appear in the others, and some prizes will appear in every prize pool (monolith, mind worms)

you sorta get an instinct for it after a while, so you don't waste time trying to get a prize that will never come.
