Sorry for my ignorant question, but what exactly is this "XP patch" you guys are talking about?

I believe it's a patch to make older games work under Windows XP, as the one found for Septerra's Core.

Not that they would be bad at it, it just fluctuates a lot.
hmm today i saw that there was an update, "patch_sid_meiers_alpha_centauri_2.0.1.22", so i downloaded that but when i try to install it says that the Game is not installed.
I tried to copy the Patch into my installation directory but it didn't work either.
Do i have to install Alpha Centauri again or does the error can be fixed othewise?

According to a poster on civfanatics there is still problems even after the update from GOG.
Not sure what he refers to yet. It seems that I still have to rely on my old SMAC cd`s and patches. As far as I am concerned the GOG SMAC looks a bit messed up at the moment.

I don't know, I have been playing it pretty much since the update yesterday, and the only problem I have is not being able to alt-tab out. I also own this game on CD ( both SMAC and the expansion ), have been playing it for years, and I haven't seen any differences yet. I would have to see more details from the guy on CivFanatics before I stop using the GoG version.

Exactly same problem here. Re-installed the game, no change. Copied patch to game folder and STILL complained it could not find the installed. Somewthing is seriously borked with this patch.

Alpha Centauri has never been able to alt-tab. Use control exit.

If you re-downloaded the entire installer (2.0.1.22) then you don't need the patch - it already has the SMAX 2.0 and XP/2000 patches applied.

The patch we have on the website only works for the earlier version - 2.0.0.19.

Alt+tabbing has been deliberately disabled because it behaves very erratically on some systems.

I suggest to those interested that to have SMACX proper patched, do the following:

Take a backup of terran.exe and terranx.exe before patching, and copy them back afterwords

1. Download Alien Crossfire v2.0 update from Firaxis, Install the zip-file but make sure you point the zip to the right
game directory.
2. Download SMAC Win 2000/XP Update from the same site. Run the executable. This one time it will uninstall
since this patch is already installed by GOG. After that run the patch once more.

Note! This is for the latest download package from GOG v2.0.1.22 that already includes the universal update

And this is required why, if I may ask? I don't see any difference between the last download from GOG ( V2.0.1.22) and the version created if one follows your instructions, so what is the point? Really, what's wrong with the GOG version?

There are several files that are not updated that should have been updated by the 2.0 update. I
don`t know how
GOG patched this thing but they messed up. The facedit is one example. Its an older version in
the GOG install. Some gfx files are missing and some text files are not updated from the 2.0
update.
The universal update or the new installer they came up with still don`t fix the patching issues.
It`s not required to install the patches like I advice. But patches are for fixing things so why
not. I believe people have downloaded the universal update thinking this would update their
game. I just say that it will not. The sollution I will use is probably a more correct
updated version of SMAC with AC than the way GOG did it.

I'll try to download the installer and install the game anew.

Of course it won't work, because you don't have the Crossfire expansion, which was recently added.
