When I start the game using the link in program files nothing happens. If I open the task manager I can see the terran.exe process appearing for a second and then disappearing. No errors.

I tried every compatibility mode options.

I am on a windows 7 x64 PC

I had this exact same issue. I used the compatibility settings and set it to run in 640x480. I left everything else unchecked and it worked like a charm.
I have the same problem in Windows 7. The screen sort of flashes but nothing happens. No error message or anything. I tried the 640x480 suggestion and when it does that it changes my screen resolution, but after a few seconds it changes back and nothing else happens.

Yeah. I am having the exact same problem. I have tried some of the solutions others have offered, but nothing has worked. Its rather annoying, actually.
I managed to make it work by adding the following lines to the Alpha Centauri.ini file found in the game folder :

DisableOpeningMovie=1
DirectDraw=0

I added them in the [Alpha Centauri] block
I'm glad you managed to make it work. Perhaps you should mark the issue as [SOLVED] for less confusion in the future.

What is your screen resolution? Any other details about your machine?

Isn´t this more of a workaround? Secret project movies still do not play, and they are quite an enjoyable part of the SMAC experience...

I don't know why it doesn't work for you without directdraw=0. But, I had the same thing happen to me when I tried Windows 98 compatibility mode, and the only reason why I tried that was because I was getting game hangs because of an artillery bug.
Secret project movies have to be toggled on/off from within the game menu, once you play, go to preferences and turn them back on.
I now play on Windows 2000 compatibility mode and finally am not getting any hangs anymore (fingers crossed). BTW, I am also on Windows 7 64-bit.

Good luck!
I'm running Windows 8 and have tried altering the compatibility settings. I've altered the resolution to 640 x 480 and changing compatibility to Windows 98/ME, although not at the same time. I've tried altering the compatibility to various versions of Windows and running the program as an administrator. So far, nothing.

Thoughts?
Generally speaking, compatibility should be set to XP. The troubleshoot option will do this for you. You could also try disabling the intro movie. There is probably an ini setting for this, but you could just move the file.

NOTING that this thread was revived... ahem...

I'm running Win7x64, Intel Gen1-I7 with quad monitor setup, and on an AMD/ATI setup w/quad monitor setup. I've not had to change anything. Download via the GOG downloader, install, modify the INI for DirectDraw=0 and off to the races I go. Nothing else has been changed, even compatibility mode is stock.
