I've installed SMAC with a PlayOnLinux script, and everything seems to work fine except for the multiplayer. When I go to the multiplayer menu and select TCP/IP, it just dumps me back the main menu. If I select TPX or serial, it give me a message about installing DirectX 5. Is that what I need to do?

I usually play the native Linux version published by Loki Games, but I’ll give a try to the GOG Windows version through WINE and see if I can find a workaround.

By the way, which distribution are you using?

-----

Download winetricks and use it to install DirectPlay into the WINE prefix of you game:

WINEPREFIX=/some/path/to/smac/wine/prefix /some/other/path/to/winetricks directplay
It will download a ~100M file, so you should be connected to Internet while launching this command.

On my test prefix, it got rid of the "back to main menu" bug when selecting TCP/IP multiplayer.

Installing DirectPlay seems to have solved the issue. Thanks!

You’re welcome!
I’m pleased to see this trick worked for you too.

And does multiplayer work for you? Because I'm getting the same result: when trying to join a network game the menu immediately aborts back to the main menu.

I will try the DirectPlay you suggest, but now that I got the game running natively (thanks again for your work) I feel bad about letting go of it.

I didn’t try network play on the native version yet, I usually only play hotseat or play-by-email.
Still, I’m going to give it a try and report here.

Much obliged, vv221. That is trully all that I'm missing. I did have success using Wine and the DirectPlay, as you mentioned.

Hosting a network game with bots seems OK, I still need to give a try to joining a game on my LAN.

My problem is indeed when joining a game.
