I recently purchased Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri for myself without any issues.

However, I then tried to purchase it for a friend. On the Paypal screen, I clicked on the button to process the order, but Paypal had an error message that it could not connect with GoG.

I refreshed the screen as was suggested, three times. When I checked my email later on, I noticed that I had been billed for the game three times - however, the recipient of the gift has received no notification of the game being gifted, either on GoG or via email.

I have asked for support help on this matter, and several days later, had not received any indication that GoG even acknowledged that support request.

I am quite disappointed by this, and would like to know what can be done.

For your GOG support problems, I'm not sure how much more can be done. It sounds like this happened over the weekend? If so, perhaps they'll get to it more speedily this week. GOG support is notoriously slow, but I wouldn't expect them to short you like that.

As for your issue in general, refreshing that page counted as a transaction. It's been a few months since I purchased from GOG, but I expect they, like many other online retailers, put up some sort of "Don't refresh the page" sort of graphic or message when processing your order. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/POST_%28HTTP%29#Affecting_server_state. So that's not a GOG or Paypal specific flaw.

In general, when working with any sort of cart or order state online I tend to try to go through it as smoothly and simply as possible; if there's any sort of hangup, I typically back out and try again a while later.
Head to My Account - gifted games. You should see the game code there. Just give it to your friend.

anyone who has the balls to post something like this on a specific game forum is either a deliberate jack ass, or a selfish idiot
