Ok I have Shadowrun Returns installed.. seems to be the latest patched as latest patch reports it's not compatible. I than grabbed my free copy of Dragonfall and installed it and ran it's patch. But the Dragonfall DLC under Shadowrun Returns will not install reporting that this version of core is not supported.

What am I doing wrong?

Ok seems the DLC is outdated

1. Had to uninstall all Shadowrun
2. Do a fresh new install
3. Now install Dragonfall DLC
4. Run the Shadowrun returns patch
5. Install Dragonfall Director's Cut

So it appears the Dragonfall DLC needs to be updated.

I guess they didn't expect anyone to want to play "standard" Dragonfall after the DC came out. Personally I agree - the DC has better features, adds missions, and fixes up some bugs (including plot-related ones), so I'll never be going back...

Yes I know. But I would have two separate installations? It's not so that the two campaigns appear within one program version? I'm asking because there is user generated content that requires both campaigns... I think an installer should be able to find traces of an existing version regardless of where I bought it, I mean, why is there a registry and such things, but I neither sure of this nor willing to experiment... ^^

Not sure, but then again, DC version is standalone on Steam too. ;)

Dragonfall DC is a completely stand-alone installation, no matter where you buy it from. The DC installation still has the data for the original Dead Man's Switch campaign, but the DMS campaign itself is not playable.

So yes, you would have two separate installations.

UGCs are also stored in different places, so you'll have to re-install them to DC if you want to play them using DC. Note however that while most UGCs will work with DC, due to the major changes in the combat system (among other things) most UGC will probably not work quite as intended. Unless of course the UGC has been made for DC...

Am gonna play Shadowrun for the first time and downloaded both Returns and Dragonfall to be sure I have the latest version of both. But the dlc installer gives me the (version not supported) error.

The Dragonfall IP was (very briefly) released as an expansion to the original Shadowrun Returns game. This is no longer available. It was then released as a stand-alone game (with a shiny new engine!) and then followed by another sequel, with another engine: Hong Kong.

So there are three games with three engines, all installed stand-alone (there is no way to traverse between the game engines, each has to be installed separately and started as a new instance).

Amongst the many mods there is also a fan-made (but semi-official) port (actually its a wholly reverse-engineered standalone UGC remake) of the original game into the third (HK) engine. (This has the ghost of the creator dispensing trivia about the tabletop game development —— in the Seamstress Union —— as well as bonus playable characters and other extras.)

Completely different engine can't be true since it is possible to play Shadowrun returns ugc campaigns in Dragonfall.

Perhaps you might object less if I said "almost totally different engine with some similarities"? ;-P

Granted (since Dragonfall was originally DLC for the first engine) but there are all sorts of features that may not work every time a new engine (or a new point-release of said engine) is published. (Just ask any of the modders how trepidatious they are whenever Harebrained does so.)

The HK engine has a completely revamped matrix combat, for instance. What really killed the modding scene for the game/s was the quick release of three versions of the engine, with nary a thought to backward compatibility.

Still, Dragonfall is my vote for the best of the series, certainly better than the other games from the developer, and only matched by some of the better UGC.
