Great remake, but where is the original (windows 95 version)l?

The store page says:

Retro Mode: Play the game like it’s 1989! Listen to Hiroyuki Masuno’s original NES chip tunes, move between rooms with pixelated transitions, and enjoy the text in retro format.

I realize that is not the "original," but it sounds like the original is contained within this release.

Addicted to sleep, I own this game on Steam, and can guarantee that Retro mode is not the original game.

All it does is change the menus, the music to NES background bloops and bleeps, and does some different screen wipes whenever you load a new screen.

This game is also very different than the original. 90% percent different, and maybe 60% of the puzzles are based on the 2005 Brew release on mobile phones. perhaps 10% on the old puzzles, and the rest, is all new.

So the retro mode is mainly 'cosmetic' difference.


GOG should release a MacVentures collection of the enhanced SVGA 256 color pc versions, if they can. If there are 32 bit versions? I know Shadowgate Classic from 1999 is compatible on 32/64 bit machines. I actually own that version.

I would also like to see the classic version here on GOG.

meh, the price is too high for what is basically an old game. (even the sale price) I agree with another poster that the new animations just look like Big Fish Hidden Object games, even tho they are nicely painted. in my opinion the old game (1989) looks better and would be what I would prefer to collect. However, I wait till more reviews of the game come out to make a final decision.

The windows 95 version isn't the original. >_> It doesn't sound like that at all. Pixelated transitions means pixelated transitions, not "the original artwork". I have no idea what "text in retro format" is but I see nothing there that implies that this contains the original version like say Monkey Island: SE. In case you didn't pick up on it from this topic, this isn't an old game or even a remake of an old game. It's a new game that recycles a bit of content from the old one (the story and a few puzzles).

Yes, this isn't any of the old versions of the game, but rather more of a re-imagining, that still holds true to its roots as olschool adventure. I'd say it's well worth the discount price.

The only retro things that come from the old game in this version is the NES sountrack (which is great BTW, but then again so is the new soundtrack as well) and the screen transitions. The retro graphics mode is just a pixelation filter, which is more or less just for fun, I doubt the devs really expect anyone to play it fully through with that turned on.

Also, if anyone is afraid of oldschool punishing play style, the game does have diffeent difficulty levels which actually do make the life easier, or harder, for player. The hardest modes add more difficulty to the puzzles, where as the easier level is more forgiving and simplifies some puzzles.

I came here to take a look to see if the originals were being added to GOG, and given the Steam store page artwork for the game states "Shadowgate: exclusive retro bundle" (my emphasis), I wouldn't be too hopeful.

I remember playing the original on a Macintosh in 1989 and enjoying it even though it seemed insanely difficult. I much preferred Dungeons of Doom (rogue-like) and Mac Cricket before I upgraded to a far superior computer - the Commodore Amiga 500! :)

It seems the classic Shadowgate games will only be on Steam for a limited time, then they're off Steam altogether forever, so I guess this is a Steam exclusive thing.
