Zoidberg: It's not Steam, it's the publisher.

I don't like this stunt either, I'll refrain buying anything from them.
Why? what possible damage did they do to you?

There are publishers that have done the same "stunt" using GOG in the past, giving away Fallout, Duke 3D and so on (and they were free *only* on GOG during the promo); so why is it suddenly "unprofessional" if it's done via Steam?

Forget it, rethorical question...

It's the same thing. Except GOG is DRM free, which is better! :D

They should cut the price in half here though, to make pay only for the addons.

You mean the addons which are already legal freeware?

BuSyMan: There is going to be an enhanced version of classic? I didn't catch that part. Can you provide a link?

SCPM: The guys who worked on Duke 3D Megaton edition and the Shadow Warrior iOS port mentioned it first, but I can't find that post anymore.
Also, there is the entry for it in the Steam registry:
http://steamdb.info/app/225160/
Maybe that entry actually refers to the new Shadow Warrior remake/reboot. Don't get me wrong, I would very much like it if we would get an updated version of the classic. I don't feel that the new reboot is doing justice to the game.

EDIT: Cancel that. By the looks of the Steam Hub for the game, it actually is an updated port. Instabuy!

The Shadow Warrior expansions, Wanton Destruction and Twin Dragons, are supposed to be legal freeware, available on ModDB, and I think you can even get them for free on the 3D Realms website.

Well, there's no point for the gog version then...
Absolutely amazing how many of you are close minded and so quick to condemn. Steam is unprofessional for having a free to play game? Close this thread? You'll never buy anything from them again? Christ, stop drinking the kool aid for a bit. I had no idea that GoG was an idol to be worshiped and go to war over. Who needs religion to incite wars when you have fanboys.

I came to simply state that I was a bit disappointed to see the game was still being sold for money on GoG when it is essentially freeware now. I recently bought the game on GoG, however I think I only paid a few dollars for it, so it is really no skin off my back. On principle however, I dislike seeing a game that is marked as freeware (and yes, it IS freeware now, 3drealms has posted the source code to their website) being sold for money.

I assume that it is just a bad timing deal where GoG had arranged to sell it, and then this debacle with keys and what have you on Steam caused the game to go freeware. However, it now falls on GoG to follow through and take care of the paperwork to reclassify the game properly here as well.

As far as the title of this thread goes.... I just don't get that.

Sorry, wrong terminology. The game is NOT freeware.

- It is free on Steam, but the publisher did not grant permission to redistribute it freely elsewhere. Not the same thing.
- The source code release does not imply any change in is commercial license because, as in many other similar cases, it does not cover any resource or assets (no maps/graphics/sounds/anything.. only the engine)

It falls on the publisher, not GOG (they can't release it for free on their own, otherwise they'll have to shell out money to the publisher on missing sales)
Apparently the publisher already stated that this version, complete with expansion, will not receive the same treatment.

Hopefully this incident gets the expansions of DN3D and the ports for SW and DN3D on gog. Gog is obviously getting the cold shoulder here.
I see nothing wrong with this.

It'd be awesome if they did this for other Build games as well.

I hope so, because now we have bunch of misguided people coming here from steam who don't see that while Shadow Warrior is now on Steam as Free to Play but is NOT Freeware. Basically, if someone want support GOG and Devolver + attempts with making reboot by WFH will come buying it here anyway. It was nasty move to release it for free somewhere else while on GOG is still being sold (because people don't see reason why pay for freeware addons and music in game folder) and bad attempt to save PR for upcoming reimagined SW. ;-)
The fanboyism... mess. Some of you guys here seriously sound like children. Grow up.

Anyway. Steam isn't any blame for this. It's the publish + IIRC, I read on Twitter that the Steam version is the base game, sans the expansion packs. GoG version, you're paying for the complete experience, hence the title.

GOG's not stupid, they're probably going to release it for free themselves sometime in the next few weeks to minimize the PR damage.

I dont think anyone is really loosing anything of this either. GOG let's you make your own hard disk copy for you to keep. Though I've grown to like steam, steam really owns your software.

Edit: Regarding the thread title, it's over dramatic and misleading.
