This was because the devs were giving away steam keys for the game but apparently the whole thing got hacked and abused and almost no one was getting the keys,so they are making it free on steam for a limited time to compensate all those folks that weren´t able to get it,then soon after the game won´t be free anymore.

Why aren´t they making it free on gog is another story though.

if this happens it makes it slightly better but as of now it does not say limited time only and it is posted in the free to play section. Also the lack of achievements compared to steams Duke Nukem 3D makes me wonder if this was really ever meant to be bought.

I guess they already got some running deal with Steam about the release of the upcoming reboot (hinted by the choice of the game title "... classic 1997")

Apparently, this version will now be F2P forever. But, you have to manually install the expansions. There's going to be an enhanced version 'Shadow Warrior Classic+' which will be a source port and will include the expansions as well.

Hmm,I was under the impression it was going to be free for only a limited time,at least going by what people were saying on facebook,if not then that´s odd and obviously ends up being an incentive to get the game on steam instead of gog.

Yeah, that sucks. Well, at least GOG gets timed exclusivity of the expansions. And who knows, maybe the publisher will offer up awesome free bonuses as compensation.

Or not, because why they should. Internet brand loyalty? They fcked up the Steam release, so decided for damage control and release the whole game for free, better option than banning accounts using stolen codes I guess. Now go and enjoy the damn game.

GOG's version is DRM free too, which is a huge plus for me. I can easily install it on my netbook without having to worry about having to run additional software that could eat up resources.

Don't get me wrong, I love Steam, but I like my classics DRM-free.

The guys who worked on Duke 3D Megaton edition and the Shadow Warrior iOS port mentioned it first, but I can't find that post anymore.

It's not Steam, it's the publisher.

I don't like this stunt either, I'll refrain buying anything from them.
