And it's far too loud.
It drowns out the sound effects (which can be turned down) which can actually be a real problem if enemies aren’t right in front of you. Sound effects should be louder than music not the other way round. I've fixed the problem by just turning the music off, it makes the game work fine but I would like to be able to listen to the music. I feel I'm missing part of the experience without it.

Help anyone?

Yeah, it's a common issue that you can't adjust the volume of CD audio music in case of emulated audio tracks, they are almost always played at full volume. The Build Engine games even seem to be a specific case with additional problems (in case of Blood the music won't loop for example, surprisingly it does in case of Shadow Warrior).

Personally I was absolutely satisfied with the volume settings when turning the SFX volume all the way up but I did some digging and found a solution for you. :) The next DosBox release will include a fix for this but you can already access an unofficial version that includes it:

In this article you will find a download link for a DosBox version that allows to adjust the music volume.
Just download it and replace the DOSBox.exe in your Shadow Warrior folder with this one. I've already tested it and it seems to work like a charm. :)

Isn't there a line you can put into the [Autoexec]? Maybe Mixer something something #:#?

I can't remember the exact phrase, and since I'm working with a backup computer I don't have any previous configuration files to copy paste from.

For what? I don't really understand your situation. If you're working with the GOG version you will just have to replace Shadow Warrior's DOSBox with the version from my link and can then adjust the volume of the music via the in-game options, just the way it's meant to be and without fiddling with any of DOSBox' parameters.

Edit: Also IIRC DOSBox doesn't even have settings or commands for the audio volume of its own (I once did some research on it and couldn't find anything), at least none of the main releases.

I had thought Dosbox has an option you can write into the Autoexec in the configuration: http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/MIXER

I can't seem to get the second word right to turn the volume down.

Yeah, as I added in the edit: these features don't seem to work with CD audio (even if its emulated). As I said, if you've got the game running via DOSBox already you just have to replace the DOSBox executable with the one from The Postmortem. GOG's config works fine with that release, plus you will be able to adjust the audio and SFX volume from within Shadow Warrior's options screen.

Whoops, thanks. My brain skipped over when I didn't see mixer.

Why has this topic not been marked as solved since it clearly seems to have been?
