Was planning to buy, since I loved Hammerwatch and enjoyed playing it over my LAN, but then I noticed that Galaxy is required to play multiplayer. Another promising game ruined by Galaxy as far as I'm concerned, I'll be taking a pass on this one I guess.
This is no different than CD keys back in the day. It's really not that crazy of a compromise, and you don't have to validate your games once a month like you do Steam.

Also I think GOG's working on a linux galaxy client, aren't they? Maybe the linux version of SSBD will be released once it's finished.

Simple CD keys were better, because you didn't have to connect to another computer to validate them and they couldn't revoke your permission to play the game. That changed eventually as things became more and more intrusive. If I wanted DRM I would just use that other online store.
I installed GOG galaxy, logged in to my account but multiplayer is greyed out .. what do I have to do to play this game online? i am confused

Me too! I also need an answer to this. I'm confused if it depends on the game, or if it's just like that, because gog-galaxy is in beta-status. Somebody knows about?
Is the game's single player and level editor working without galaxy (or internet connection)?
Most disappointing for me about the galaxy requirement is the fragmentation of playerbase.

Bought this on Gog because I liked Hammerwatch and being from the same devs I had expected to use Direct IP connection. Alas! No multiplayer with Steam players.

I've faced exactly same problem. I'm a fan of Hammerwatch too and bought this game with expectations to play multiplayer independently of Galaxy or Steam. And now I can't play it with a random person because of empty Galaxy lobby.
Does this game not have LAN support? I was literally about to just press 'buy'...
