Although this is a great game no matter how you look at it, for $5 more you can get Serious Sam HD which is an official HD conversion of this game. The game is exactly the same as you remembered it, just with a more modern engine & better graphics.
Anyway, about the game.
Straight off the bat, Serious Sam is a completely non-serious game.
It's full of cheesy one liners and awesome secrets all over the place.
Sam is a great character who is a parody of Duke Nukem.
This game needs to be played co-op, I mean sure you can play it singleplayer but it's not very exciting and where this game truly shines is playing together with friends. The game pits you against HUGE forces of enemies which when the game was released would bring computers to a crawl. The engine probably still looks great as it was quite impressive for it's time, especially pushing the enemy numbers it manages.
The gameplay is standard FPS shooter fare, wipe out all the bad guys or find a key or switch to progress to the next area, rinse - repeat. The enemies are quite varied and the locations are very distinct and pretty. The game is going for an Egyptian theme and there are plenty of pyramids with their traps waiting to catch you off guard. The game has a lot of traps where you will be pulled towards spikes, have to dodge things or the room is just flooded with enemies. As I said before, this is a load of fun with friends especially watching them mess up and fly into the spikes lol
Although the game comes with modding support I don't think it was really utilized so there isn't much in the mods department. The game has a few competitive modes but they are pretty awful and feel like tehy were just added at the last minute to add some extra longevity to the game. I cannot stress how good the co-operative play is though.
You really must play this game at least once, it's great fun. The only issue I have with it is I just don't see why you wouldn't pay the extra $5 and get the same game with a fresh coat of paint, better compatibility & support.
It's not a tough decision for me considering I can't run Serious Sam HD. I know from experience that I can run this one though. :)
Even though I HAVE Serious Sam HD (snagged it in the sale a wihle back) and I have it for the Xbox 360.
It'll just be nice to have a version of the game that runs well on my dinky little laptop.

that's a mighty good point
Or you could just get this DRM free version if only to support GOG. Besides, apparently the HD version isn't really worth it.

you lier.
I love the Serious Sam series, and the HD versions is great for them to keep themselves alive while developing SS3 and for the new multiplayer features, plus new players.
But I am not sure why to buy this on GOG since I alrdy got my old discs and HD on steam
i think serious sam 1 isnt worth the hd version as it is literally just graphics, but 2 does have a few extra modes
I already have this on CD-ROM from ages back, but I bought a copy from GOG as well. Why? Well, I wanted to support GOG's work, and I wanted a DRM-free version of my favourite games, of which Serious Sam is one of them.
(If they ever get Thief or System Shock 2, I'd like to buy 2 copies of each, I love them so much!)

and find someone to coop the hell out of SS2 with :D
As per my post elsewhere, these originals still look great and are a ton of fun -- no reason not to snap them up. It's worth it for DRM free fun and to support GOG.
They look good, play on anything, are a ton of fun -- it's a no brainer!

no wonder they are good but have you taken a look at the serious sam hd trailers and there is the demo for it on steam it looks absolutely amazing, i had thrashed the serious sam gold edition disks i had till their death,as an player who finished this long time back,i would say the hd version is a must buy,but the original version is good as it runs on almost any old machines
just hoping to buy hd version at a good discount got to try the co op out would love it if gog got the hd versions here
No, i have not. I refuse to use Steam -- absolutely do not like it or anything about it. Just me. I prefer GOG. I'm sure the HD versions are nice and all, but I'm perfectly happy with the originals -- and especially, as you point out, for the fact that I can play them on just about any rig around.
I don't think you'll see the HD versions here anytime soon, but I hope you find them elsewhere and enjoy them.
Good luck
