Is there any way to run it in a window? When i run the executable it goes fullscreen without asking, and Alt+Enter does not seem to work as a combo. Resolution is really low for a wide screen, so a windowed mode might do the trick.

Same problem which I just solved.
1. Create an desktop shortcut for sntrm.exe
2. Right click on the shortcut –> Properties
3. Find "Target" field and add -window at its end
4. Run the game via shortcut

Didn't for me, and that was using the desktop shortcut created on install.

TBH though I dont find the resolution to be that annoying, running a 21inch widescreen at 1440x900 I think it looks just fine. I've seen a lot worse.

You can always use VirtualBox to create a Windows XP virtual machine, install the game and run it in there, if you're desperate.

That won't work either, it tells you your video card has no hardware blitter and crashes right as the game loads.

It would be really cool if gog could come up with some kind of wrapper for these old games to allow them to be played in a window.

Assuming the game uses DirectX, you can give DxWnd a try, just google it. I haven't tried it myself, but it supposed to make fullscreen DirectX apps playable in a window. The project is probably dead, couldn't find a proper homepage for it, but it might still be floating around the net, worth a try.

You have to use the actual sntrm.exe from the folder, the shortcut created on install does not work.

Just to clarify a bit, if you want to run Sanitarium in a window, create a shortcut to sntrm.exe from the installation folder, then (as listed above), update the shortcut so that the Target includes -w

For example:

"C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Sanitarium\sntrm.exe" -w

Just as a side note, if you want to skip the opening cinematics, you can do so by updating the Target with a /skip parameter:

"C:\Program Files\GOG.com\Sanitarium\sntrm.exe" /skip

(note you can combine the two by using -w /skip if you like)

My best friend and I do a live broadcast of game playthroughs with commentary, and we've been trying to get this one to work. Whenever we load the game up and play it in a window, the game slows down like crazy. Everything runs at about 20%, sound, video, mouse, all that. Has anyone else had that problem?

Confirmed.

The game was crashing on me every time I got a notification on the windows taskbar so I thought I'd run it in windows mode to see if that solved the problem. The instructions above work but now the game moves like molasses in winter.

Here is what I did to fix the problem.

Right-click on the desktop icon that you created and select troubleshoot compatibility. Exit this feature and then right click on the icon again and select properties. There is now a new tab called Compatibility. Leave everything blank and only tick the box that says run this is 640x480 screen resolution.

This solved both the crashing problem and the speed issue. It, of course, messes up the desktop so it might not be useful for someone screen recording the game but for my purposes it works.

Yeah, I can confirm that this solution works. However, as you indicated, it screws up the desktop, which makes the recording software unable to register any video. Any other ideas?
