I have Sam and Max Save the World installed on a Windows 10 machine.

Only episode 5 seems to launch, and is formatted differently than the other episodes.

For example:

The episode 5 folder contains the samandmax105.exe, the prefs.prop, and the Pack folder with .vox files in it.

However the episode 1 folder contains the samandmax101.exe, an fmodex.dll and a Pack folder with .ttarch files in it.

It looks like all episodes but episode 5 have older/broken folder contents.

Is there a way to force the other episodes to run like episode 5? Am I missing an update of some kind?

Try to start the episodes in windowed mode.

- Enter the selected episode's folder and backup prefs.prop and all .save files (if present), then delete them all.
- Right-click on Windows' Start button and choose Run.
- Run REGEDIT
- Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Telltale Games\Sam & Max Season 2 and modify "Windowed" from 0 to 1.
- Run the game.

Ran into the same problem just there, I figured it was a DirectX problem but I really have no clue what I'm doing!

Anyway what worked for me was to download DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) from the offical Microsoft site,

and then to run DSXSETUP.

This game doesn't run on Windows 10 and as far as I can tell, GOG has not addressed this issue or offered a patch to make the game run. I loved the original and am disappointed that GOG would sell a game in this state with no warning or explanation. Before you ask, yes I downloaded DirectX drivers and changed the resolution. Please correct me if I am wrong GOG, but it kinda seems you dropped the ball on this one. BUMP

it turns out to make Telltales Sam and Max games work on Win10, you need to unplug your Xbox 360 Controiller.

The games run just fine with Windows 10. The only real problem (why would people not keep DirectX up to date?) is the different directinput.dll which makes Telltale games crash on startup, if a XBox360 controller is connected.

This affects ALL telltale games - or at least all earlier ones.
Microsoft changed the DLL in Windows 10, Telltale never bothered to patch that.

All you need to do is to get a older (Windows 8 would be best) directinput.dll and put it in the game directory.

And yes, Telltale had a terrible support. Apart from this game braking problem which gives their games a bad reputation they also never replaced LeChucks voice in any online release of TOMI EP1 (not even the one on their homepage). The only way to get the voice which is also used in the later episodes is to grab it from the DVD version (which I did).

Did anyone try using & configuring DGVoodoo on the Sam & Max Episodes for W10?

Yes. I used dgVoodoo2 months ago when I played the first two seasons and it worked.

Download the latest version for regular usage (at the moment: dgVoodoo v2.71.3).

Note: Windows Defender might give a virus alert. This is a false-positive.

Copy the files in the folder \MS\x86 inside the .zip-file to the folder of each episode. Also copy dgVoodoo.conf and dgVoodooCpl.exe to the folder of each episode. With the config tool (dgVoodooCpl.exe) you can turn off the option for the dgVoodoo Watermark in the DirectX settings menu, see for more details here:

After that the episodes should run. Edit: I used the Custom Resolution Tool to set a widescreen resolution, see my post below.

I installed Season 1 and 2 again and tested the current version of dgVoodoo with every episode. It worked. The only thing I configured was the removal of the dgVoodoo watermark.

However, I forgot to mention the Custom Resolution Tool which I used to set the widescreen resolution:

"Note: You have to run the game at least once so the prefs.prop file is built. You may also have to select the video mode at least once so a resolution mode is stored in the prefs.prop file."

This was tedious. However, I could set my wanted resolution (1366x768) for each episode. There was also no stretching.

For Season 3 this is not necessary. It should run on a Windows 10 PC where DirectX 9 is installed:

I've been too busy w/ other stuff, as usual; namely watching TV and playing other games - i.e. Control: Ultimate and Shenmue 1 on Steam, if we're getting specific w/ games here.

Yea, so in case anyone reads the original question again and might get lost in the weeds here on all these side discussions, to be clear, BY FAR the easiest quick fix for making Telltale games work on Win10 (including Sam and Max) is just to UNPLUG YOUR XBOX 360 CONTROLLER.

Yes. This seems to work for some people. However, I don't have an XBOX 360 Controller to unplug.

And if you actually want to use your XBox 360 Controller to play, get a Windows 8 directinput.dll and copy it to your game directory.

Just upgrade to Windows 7.
