I'm just curious as to who you normal choose as you make your way through the game. The last time I played through it years ago I used mostly James, with a level or two of Persephone. So far I've mixed it up a bit more this time:
Stratos
Persephone
Pyro
Persephone
Do you normally stick with one god or mix it up?
Straight up James works great in my opinion, and I like him anyway :-) The Boulderdash is pretty much the best unit in the game, and if you want him, you can dabble in other gods early on, but must take the bulk of the missions from James. The spells are also quite good as well, Bovine Intervention is great fun!
I used to play with Persephone as second (third?) god in order to have the healing scarabs.
This time I went a bit more for the James and Pyro gods, as apeman said the Boulderdash is really awesome, although most James' creatures are pretty slow. I prefer binding some of them to my manaliths and lure the enemy wizards to them in order to avoid a direct confrontation in the middle of the field.
[Trivia] James and the Bovine Intervention should remind you of another Shiny/Interplay game involving cows and earthworms: Earthworm Jim.
Also, once you finish the single player game (quite hard if I remember well), you will be able to choose different gods for each level in multiplayer games. When I bought the game eight years ago I had to cheat for the last mission (some tweaking involving Scapex), but now, I promise I will finish the game without cheating!
I dont know im dowloading the game right now but keeep posting up diffrent things plz :D so i know how to choose for a awsome playing time :DD so far sounds like a great game
It is a great game, but beware: the learning curve is quite steep, and make sure you spend some time on the three tutorial missions. This game is really worth it.
Charnel offers some of the best melee creatures when Pyro's minions are very decent range fighters. I used to mix them with a few naive slaves from James. Sweet...
True, it's so gr8 game. I've had Sacrifice from cover-cd for a few years. ;)
Last time I chose Pyro, 'cause fire'n'progress sounded good. But what about mixes? Is that more effective option?
I agree with ClementXVII. I always take Persephone for the second mission so that I have the Scarab. That thing can be very useful for keeping you troops alive, especially if you have a special character you want to keep alive.
So far mixing up the gods has turned out okay and I think it's amusing to see minions of Pyro fighting along side with minions of Persephone. I'm planning on doing a couple of James's missions next.

Oh, so that's why I had had a kind of little problems, until I got mass Pyro's bombards.
Now I see that Pyro has the best rangers (or not?...), James's the best meele minions and Persephone's kinda protection units. And what do you think about Stratos's and Charnel's units?
I think you'll find that the Boulderdash in Level 6 is more potent than the Bombard. They are much more accurate at range and even more powerful up close due to the way their shot splits up. I agree that the early James units are not paticularly special, but Halo of Earth is an awesome spell in Level 5. I also think the Rhinok is the best 5-soul unit. It can cast a weaker Halo of Earth on itself and dominates anything on the ground.
I actually had a savegame for every possible combination of campain playthroughs, because it used to be impossible to edit your multiplayer spellbook - you had to play the game to get the spell combinations.
That said, this used to be my selection:
Level 1:
Stratos
(frostwolwes are great to micro with, and the brainiac's knockdown is amazing, as is the short recharge time on the lightning spell)
Level 2:
Persephone (healing bug - enough said)
Level 3:
Pyro
This is the last level of completely free choice. Creature-wise this level is redundant for me, since I will take a brawler next level anyway (Storm giants <3) so I go with the firefists since they at least are adorable, and rings of fire is a great spell.
Level 4:
Stratos, no contest. Storm giants are amazing, and chain lightning is possibly even better. Second choice here would be Persephone due to the awesome rainbos wpell, but her followups are weak.
Level 5:
James
Although the Icarus is kind of sucky, Halo of Earth makes up for it. Once spellbook editing became available, I used Charnel in this slot, and sometimes Persephone for the entertaining but kind of useless rain of frogs. The bombers of Persephone and Stratos have a very nice web ability that can turn battles if you're good at micro.
Level 6:
James
BOULDERDASH!
Level 7:
James
No choice in the campaign here, otherwise I'd go with stratos.
Level 8:
Charnel
Largely personal preference here - and in the campaign here it's a choice between James and Stratos, and the final creature for James doesnt fly so I didn't want to take it
Level 9:
Charnel
No choice, and the Hellmouth is a great creature anyway.
I went with Charnel for most of my first play, it really was worth it.
Charnel's campaign is hilarious :-)

I know when I played the first time around back in the day I stuck mostly to Stratos, Persephone & James (yes, playing it the goodie-goodie route), but I'm so very tempted to have a run through switching off between Charnel & Pyro.
Are there any levels I should particularly avoid with those two?
I go with Stratos a lot, mostly because I just like the character. He does give a lot of fast units so if you get your speed up you can flank your opposition. Nobody can concentrate on attacking you if you're desecrating their alter.
But the Scarab is a must, no doubt.
I went with pure Charnel years ago when I bought the game new. Funny thing is that I still own the CD! But I can't get it to run under Vista. I was super eager to play this again, thank God for G.O.G.!!!
