Movement with WASD is locked to being diagonal, and there doesn't seem to be any way to change it. Why? Why would anyone ever think that this was a good idea? What's especially strange is that with a controller movement is normal. In fact, if you plug a controller in, WASD will work like normal until you move the mouse, at which point is gets locked to being diagonal again.

I'm really hoping that this will be fixed in an update. Ruiner seems like it could be a cool game, but not if I have to choose between horrible movement with KB/M or horrible aiming with a controller.
Hey, thanks for your feedback.

KB/M movement follows level design. Some players may feel awkward at first, but most of them say that after a moment they get used to it. Since the environment in Ruiner is rotated a bit, it'd be really uncomfortable to control the character, as you'd have to press two sets of buttons alternatively (ex. AS and WS) in order to walk straight. We tested that scheme and decided agaist it.

It's unlikely we'll provide a choice (or a "fix") when it comes to this.
But give it a few more minutes, you may just get used to it :)

Thank you for responding, and for being active on the GOG forum.

I could not disagree with you more on this. Other games, such as Bastion and Transistor, have their worlds designed at a similar angle. They control normally, and always felt fine to me. To some people it may be uncomfortable, and to others the tilted controls Ruiner has are uncomfortable. That's why options exist. That's why rebindable controls are essential to any game, which is another thing Ruiner originally didn't have.

It's your job as the developers to make your game playable and enjoyable for your customers. To refuse to provide an option for something like this comes across as lazy at best. I've seen others complain about this on your Steam forums, so I know it's not just me that feels this way. We shouldn't have to fight against your unorthodox control scheme just because it's what you prefer. I really hope you'll reconsider on this. At worst, maybe the people who want normal controls would find that the tilted directions really are preferable. If that happens, your team will still look good for having provided the option. At best, you'll allow more people to enjoy the game you've put so much time and work into. That has to be worth it, right?

Hey, thanks for your arguments, we appreciate all feedback.

But as I said before, we've done tests with such configuration and the game was unplayable. It's not the issue of what we prefer or not, just what we've determined based on feedback during those tests and to our best knowledge.
From what players say, it may take a few minutes into the game to get comfortable with the controls and the perspective, so I hope it can still manage to capture you :)

I know this is an old topic, but I'm just kinda shocked at how out of touch this dev is. The keyboard controls are unforgivable and it's so bizarre to not at least include functioning controls along with the default bad controls.

The bad attitude of the dev post actually makes me want to abandon the game pretty quick. Game seems to have a million problems outside of the controls anyways.

Lmao, what a joke.
Holding 2 keys is too hard? Wut.
How do you think the million other games using wasd has diagonal movement?
Mind blown with absurdity. Why release a pc game if you are so out of touch with how games are played on pc.
