dersonje: Turning off DEP for RCT did not work for me, neither did setting DEP to Opt In. However, i used EMET 5.0 to set DEP, ASLR, and SEHOP to Opt In... After the reboot, the game worked fine on Win8 without admin rights or AppCompat modes. EMET is free from Microsoft and adds security features to frequently hacked software (its a good idea to import the popular software config after installing). In this case i lowered the security of Windows (allowing RCT to run) and added additional security to vulnerable apps at the same time.
I know this is an old thread, but I'm hoping I'm not too late.

Can someone please tell me HOW to get this EMET thing to work? I can't get RCT.exe to launch at all either, even after setting it to compatibility mode and turning off DEP for it. I downloaded EMET and attempted to run it with settings close to what was described above, but the game still won't launch.

Help?

You trying to run RCT1 using some hacky patch mess?

Forget that, OpenRCT2 is backwards compatible with RCT1.
While I'll readily admit to being intrigued by this, I already have RCT1 and one of the expansions. I just want to get it to work again. Call me a purist, but only if that is impossible will I try a newer version.

Well, you can be as pure as you want, as OpenRCT2 still requires the original game files. :B

(And what do you mean, one of the expansions? GOG is selling the complete collection.)

RCT1 and Corkscrew Follies on the original CD-ROMs. I kept them from when I originally played them years ago. Recently dug them out of a box so I could show them to my kid.

Ah, that might explain the issue. GOG throws on some nice compatibility things into their packaged version.
i press press play on the game and it doesnt open

Alternately, did you try running via OpenRCT 2?
This wouldn't launch other than start the splash screen from Atari then 'stopped working' with Win7
found this soultion from a poster on steam

GA5MλSK: Just found this out recently but if you navigate to your options.txt file located in: C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Atari\RCT3 (Win 7) and copy the command: "SkipBannerSequence 1" (Without quotes) in the options.txt file, it will hopefully fix your issue. Was searching everywhere for the past three days trying to fix this issue and now that I have, it feels so obvious. Hope this information helps anyone trying to fix this issue. (I have the retail copy of the game, but this should work for the steam copy as well.)
