Anyone know if this can be run on Ubuntu? I've got an Ubuntu machine set up for my kids and this game would be perfect for them to mess around with for the next 2 months of their summer vacation :P
I'm pretty sure it can. I have it running flawlessly on Crossover for mac which is just a GUI wrapper for DarWine (the OS X implementation of Wine). The game is coded almost entirely in Assembler therefore it runs pretty damn fast and is very portable.
I've heard it runs amazingly on Wine, partially owing to the fact that it's almost entirely written in x86 assembly.
Bought it and installed it on Ubuntu through Wine...works super well! (Had to bypass the launcher and just run rct.exe)

The boys (6 and 8) love the look of it and can't wait to play it tomorrow. Anyone know if there's a build mode or money cheat for them to start with?
I'm glad you got it running. I'm also super happy that you are starting your kids off right with REAL thinking person's game. I was about 12 when I first picked up RCT and loved every minute of it. There was no trainers (or at least I had no idea how to get them to work) when I was playing it. I had to learn the hard way. It's so much more satisfying knowing that you EARNED every section of that rollercoaster and have it triple your profits in half a game year.

Sadly there is no build mode in the game (this was a feature added in the sequel) and trainers won't work with this version. Loopy Landscapes/Added Attractions patched them out so unless somebody has made a trainer specifically for Loopy Landscapes, none of the currently available trainers will work.

Also, since Chris Sawyer wanted it to be a game rather than a design tool he didn't implement any money cheats or anything like that. So you have to actually use skill and strategies to be successful.

There are PLENTY of guides online that teach you the ins and outs of the game. So perhaps you could have fun learning the game and then pass the knowledge onto your boys?

Good Luck!

That will allow you to edit your save files and give you anything you need. It will even allow you to unlock all research even stuff that isn't available on that particular scenario. Happy building!

BTW I've confirmed that this does indeed work on this particular version of the game. It's not an unlimited money cheat, but it's the best you can do without somebody developing a working trainer that pokes/peeks the memory on the fly. :)

There's another thread in this forum about issues with right clicking when running the game via Wine, though the issue arose on a Mac.

Does this issue occur when running the game on Linux?
I can't get the game to run in Fedora 15/Wine-1.3.24. When starting with RCT.exe I'm getting the following error message:
'Exception Raised - Access Violation
Error Location: Windows Unknown Driver'

Anyone with the same problem?
I have the same problem as you, SemperFi. I've tried googling it but nothing helpful came up.
Is your RCT directory set as read only?

Very same here on Mint 10 (I think) I May be running the 1.2.whatever release not 1.3. The Appdatabase makes it sound like it works well sometimes and not at all a lot more of the time. I would be very uneasy recommending it to someone who didn't have windows to fall back on.

On my Mac I am using CXZ, and the only engine that would work correctly (both for this and RCT2) was the Emerald engine, which I believe uses Wine 0.9.60. I don't know if this helps any Linux users or not, but it works flawlessly on my Mac. All of the other engines either provided clicking issues or startup errors.
A bug report has been filed:

As a workaround you can try setting DirectDrawRenderer to opengl in Wine registry and see if that works (winetricks ddr=opengl).

Thanks!
The workaround works perfectly with the exception that I cannot change the resolution (gives the same error). I'm also unable to find a simple config file where I can change it.
Either way, this game is still very enjoyable on 640x480 :).

Yes, the same crash happens here *occasionally* on screen resolution change. Run the game in virtual desktop mode instead of fullscreen: the game successfully changes resolution in virtual desktop mode for me.

You have to set the Virtual desktop resolution to one of the supporteed resolution of RCT.

If RCT has to change the resolution it wil die.
