I've been holding off buying ROTT from here, because of a problem that has been plaguing every other release of Rise of the Triad that I have owned before. Whether its the original DOS executable, or a modern source port, i get the same result. When I start up a game, and start playing, at some point my character starts looking down, and i have to use the align center button to look straight ahead again. Sometimes it does the opposite and starts looking up. It's very annoying moving around while looking at the floor or at the sky/ceiling. Anyone know if the GOG version of ROTT has that problem too? I would assume the GOG release is the original DOS .exe with dosbox with a GOG wrapper. So, if it doesnt have that problem, was it fixed by changing the settings in dosbox.conf?
many thanks

While I don't know what was changed, I did experience those issues.
Part of the problem is various commands (move & look) can be mapped to the same keys. Spend some time in the key controls area in options and sort it out. Depending on which keys and timing of self and PC, you end up looking in odd directions. You'll be best off clearing them (or setting them to something unused) then slowly adding them back to whatever layout you feel best with.
My solution however, was to use WinROTT. It gives a little better control over the game and mouselook. Be sure not to map the mouse to movement and look! That caught me off guard first off.

Thanks for your comments. That mouselook problem i found it when i tried winrott too, up to the last official version, 2.24. Nowadays, it's there as well in the latest WinrottGL, 1.48. I tried deleting all the .ROT files, didnt change anything. I'll try your suggestion and unbind all keys, and then bind them one by one. I hope that helps.
Oh, and as some info for all you GOG ROTT fans, I'm betatesting and polishing up icculus' Rott port for win32/linux, hopefully soon it will be in a stable, working state. : )

Yeah, that annoys me to no end.
It also annoys me that you cant walk forward and shoot at the same time (at least with my cfg: Rmouse=Forward, Lmouse=Shoot).
What annoys me even more than those 2 though, is the fact that winrott does not work on XP x64.
:(
Will this "icculus' Rott port" work on XP x64?
Win32 does not sound promising for x64 support.

That's what we're working on too. It's not being developed with the limitations of a a specific 32 or 64 bit platform. So it should run great on 64bit systems too. : )

Oh , and out of curiosity, why are you using XP 64? micro$oft dropped support for it a long time ago, and they admit it was a crappy product. And for they to admit they made a crappy product, that says a lot. Use XP 32 instead. Or wait until windows 7 is released, its not that far away.

Sweeeeet.
"Oh , and out of curiosity, why are you using XP 64?"
Because I despise Vista, and win7 is just Vista even more hardcore.
And yes, I use Vista every day at work, so I know my likes and dislikes.
I also use Win7 every other day, so I know of what I speak there also.
As for 64 vs 32, I have 4gb's ram (I really have 8gb's, but with all 8gb's inserted, my mobo wont post).
So, I like having my full 4gb memory, plus it is faster than 32 bit in some things.
And since when did MS stop support?
I get the same updates that xp 32 gets (except SP3, and I dont want that anyway), so .......

Ah, well, to each their own, i havent tried XP 64 myself, i have only read some comments from people saying they had all kinds of problems with it. It's basically win2k3 server, right?
Yep, 2003 server is the under-pinning of it.
Thats why comercial support for it wasnt highly adopted, just because it is really a server os at its core.
:(
But, I havent had many issues at all with it.
Mostapps like AV and FW dont support xp 64, but a few do.
I had to buy a new av, but that was like $40 for 2 years.
Not a big issue.
My printer supports 64, as well as my sound card, so not much to complain about.
At least most of my old games work still.
I am happy.

The game's default controls automatically assign the "aim" control to the "a" key." I you bind the movement keys to WASD and forget to bind "aim" to some other key, the character may look up or down when trying to strafe left. This problem with the controls is hard to spot because ROTT allows you to bind a key to multiple actions. Try changing the "aim" action to some other key.
