Some people really love Rise of the Triad, but I didn't enjoy this game at all, even back at the time. A wannabe Doom-killer, this game feels actually like Wolfenstein 3D 2.5, with lots of b-movie flavour and silliness.
The game is mindless action with virtually no plot, but lots of humour, thanks to creative director Tom Hall. Levels look and feel blocky, and it's immediately obvious why all the maps are square-like, with no curves whatsoever: the level design was of the "drag and drop on a grid" type. If you want to play this game, you have to be aware that you are going to feel like a "rat in a maze", with arbitrary traps and platforms standing in your way.
The graphics consist of digitized characters taking shots at you in boxy surroundings. There are many weapons but you can only carry a few, and the most powerful ones have very limited ammunition. Still, they enable you to see the high point of the game, which is of course the amazing "ludicrous gibs!" (the enemy gets blown up in chunks).
I have to admit that Rise of the Triad is not my cup of tea. Still, it's simple enough, and if you like over-the-top FPS action and brutal Prince-of-Persiaesque labyrinths full of traps (yes, there's a lot of jumping), you may want to try it. Not all players will appreciate it, so it's always a good idea to try the demo before getting the full game. This is a release from the shareware era, so the first levels were available for free!
Well the game was originally Wolfenstien 3D 2 so that's why it feels like it. They used that engine and modified it but that's why it has no curves.
Also the shareware is a completely new set of maps. They aren't the first levels of the full game.
Otherwise, I do agree it's an love it or hate it game. I happen to love it. :P
unfortunately, your right... it's a love or hate game.. most seem to love it, not for the intellectual challenge, but as the mindless shooter it is...
Let me tell you why people loved the game back in the 'day.'
It has bullet holes. It has multi tiered levels. It has jump-pads...waaaay before many games uses them. (I think it was the first for all three of these, btw.) The story was about as silly as any first person shooter was at the time (or many now) but it was a fun game to play. This one, not Doom as most poeple might say, is the one that really got me interested in FPShoters. I went from this to Duke Nukem 3d...so maybe my 'evolution' of gaming is a tad different then others...but I know why people liked/like the game.
And, as always, people have different tastes.
Also this was the first shooter to feature an up/down - doom and it's clones being shoot forwards only and the projectile would move in the vertical plane if needed....
ROTT required aiming up/down (until you got into homing equipment anyway)....
Besides a drunk missile with huge numbers of forces against you is fun - especially with the ludicrous gibs cheat on /cough....
I spent many hours playing multiplayer over modem with this and a friend back in the day.... a hell of a lot of fun it was.

I still dont get the aiming up down in ROTT. It's so annoying at times it goes up and down, and i have to keep moving while looking at the floor/ceiling.
I am looking for a mod for ROTT to map the up/down to the mouse.

Is there a mod for that? Are there mods for ROTT at all? With its source code out, maybe someone could write that feature in the game, but apparently not many people want to.
good question... I'll be looking in to it and let you know. However i have to head to work tonight, so if you find anything out on your own let us know. I am just going to do a search for it in the morning when I get back.
This is all I could find so far:
http://www.fileshack.com/file.x/6322/Rise+of+the+Triad+Goodies+Pack
it is a goodie pack including level editor, etc. I haven't used it yet so I am not exactly sure what it includes, but a bunch of different places have it for download on the web. I'll continue looking.

It also shares the same engine. ROTT is the apex (and final iteration) of TED, short for Tile EDitor.
It even powered Commander Keen in an earlier iteration.
I absolutely love the game, I haven't played this game since I was in Elementary School, now Ive been graduated from High School for almost a year now and im 20
Im just so happy to be able to play it again, the "god mode" is the best god mode in any game
Agreed! This game is great fun. It doesn't take itself seriously in the slightest. It knows it's cheesy, camp and ridiculous and it positively revels in that fact. Remember, these were the days before all first person shooters were brown - those days started with Quake. ROTT on the other hand, explodes (literally) with colour, inventiveness and some features we've not seen since. Dog Mode? For that matter, God Mode? ("Mmmmmmmm!!!! Aaaaaaaaahhhhh!!!! Urrrrrrrr!!!!")
I love this game. Is anyone out there playing multiplayer? I remember always wanting to try it when it first came out but not being able to.
