First things first: I really LOVE this game and was more than happy to buy it as soon as it became available here on GOG.com.

I experience one annoying problem, however: sometimes (roughly 50% of all tries) I get the error message mentioned in the topic's subject whenever I start/restart/exit a race, then the program freezes out and I'm back on my desktop. Needless to say, this makes unlocking more cars/tracks nearly impossible, as the game doesn't register victory when it happens (which seems to occur pretty often) .

I run the game as an administrator (tried it with- and without this option enabled, got the same results) on Windows 7 64-bit and didn't have any other problems with it apart from this one. All help or tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Looks like its time to submit a support ticket. I know there was a site that basically was making support for Re-Volt.

I've been doing some checks with the compatibility settings....

And it almost seems to be that turning off compatibility settings off and NOT running as admin is key.

He says that the GoG version uses one of the older BETA versions, but that the ALPHA downloads are by now much more mature. Try one of those alpha releases.

There has been ~10 bug fixes related to in-game crashes since the Re-Volt 1.2 Beta which GOG is shipping, so there might be a chance the new alpha will help solve your problem. What Operating System are you using?

Thank you for all these tips! I'll download the new 1.2 alpha patch for starters and see if it does any good. (I'd do it for the split-screen support alone. Strangely, I seemed to recall the game already having one by default. Maybe it was just wishful thinking on my part... Well, until now anyway.) Also I'll try and fiddle around with the compatibility settings once I get home. I'll report back with the results soon.

There was split-screen support in PSX and Dreamcast versions, but PC versions never had it so you are partly correct. :)

Okay, I know I said I'll update this thread with the results, but the thing is, I was too busy playing Re-Volt... :3

In the meantime I turned off all compatibility mode-related options and, after a long thinking process, decided against the alpha patch for the time being. The freezing didn't go away, but it's frequency lowered significantly, something I still can't quite put my fingers on. Anyway, it's but a minor annoyance now (a major one if it happens at the end of a cup...) so I managed to unlock all the cars and tracks. Now for the Time Trials!

Edit: oh, one more thing! I don't really know whether it's important to note or helps us solve this thing (if it even affects other players, too), but the freezing always occurs on the loading screen, when the loading bar fails to show up for a few seconds, almost as if it's the cause of it. Again, I'm not sure if it matters at all, but maybe it can bring us (or just me?) one step closer to finally tracking the source and I felt it important to provide all the details.

Freezings in Re-Volt 1.2 Alpha? That sounds really weird to me.

If there is 1 good thing I can say about the alpha is its great stability, it never crashes for me compared to other versions. About the compatibility modes, yes the best thing is to turn them off.

One thing you probably don't know is that Re-Volt 1.2 Beta still requires re-volt to be run as administrator, but when upgrading to Alpha re-volt doesn't need to be run as administrator anymore.

Tip: There is a Re-Volt Error log file created in your %temp% folder. It's a TXT file. Can you attach it so we can check it out? There is a chance that we can track what's causing the error message.

Hmm, I don't think axl ever installed the 1.2 alpha patch because the frequency of the freezing he had when playing beta lowered significantly for an unknown reason. Maybe I interpretted his message wrong tho.

EDIT: Nvm. AFAIK, the 1.2 alpha fixes this by its new 'Profile' system - all your save data is then stored in a profile residing inside <Re-Volt Directory>\Profile\<profile name> instead of instead of the registry (which I assume is why 1.2 beta wants/needs admin rights to run).

That's really good to know! 1.2 alpha looks better and better by the day. I still don't feel an uncontrollable urge to install it right away, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate it. :) (Maybe when it's officially stable, and I mean out of alpha. By the way: why do they call the less advanced version 'beta' and the more advanced version 'alpha'? It's some seriously backward logic right there, 1.2.1 or something like that would make much more sense to me at least.)

What you said about admin rights sounds possible enough. Maybe the reason I can run it without ticking the "Run this program as an administrator" checkbox is because I already have admin privileges on the account I use to play the game with. Still a really f***ed up way to store information, though...


Oh, one more question: what if I install 1.2 alpha? Do I have to start over or does it somehow obtain my save data from the system registry? (And in that case, which file will it get: the one created with- or without the "Run this program as..." option enabled?) I know I could easily find this out just by installing the update (maybe there isn't even a way to tell otherwise), but I don't want to risk my progress. Thanks for your patience! :)

Essentially all the features described on the Re-Volt 1.2 website is limited to only the beta version. The developers has been focusing on releasing new features and bugfixes rather than updating the documentation on the 1.2 website though. So now there is a huge amount of documentation needed to be written - this is partly why Re-Volt 1.2 Alpha is still alpha and not released as beta. Other than that there are also a few more goals intended to be reached before a next beta can be released (AFAIK).

I tried to find a clear answer from the developers, but only found this indicating that the registry save data is imported. So I tested myself and can conclude that yes, once you have installed Re-Volt 1.2 alpha and start it for the first time, Re-Volt 1.2 alpha will ask you to create a profile and will automatically import your progress.

BUT - I will in any case advice you to backup your save data. Open 'regedit', go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Acclaim -> Re-Volt and right-click -> Export. Place the file somewhere you can find easily. In the event that Re-Volt 1.2 alpha for some reason doesn't import your save data, you can still re-install Re-Volt from the GOG installer and run the registry file afterwards.

Sorry, but I have absolutely no idea which one. :/

EDIT: According to huki the current progress will be imported depending on whether you run Re-Volt 1.2 Alpha as administrator or not. If you run 1.2 alpha in admin mode for the first time, it should import the progress you made in 1.2 beta admin mode. if you run 1.2 alpha in normal mode for the first time, it should import the progress you made in 1.2 normal mode.

Thank you for all of your answers and patience, I greatly appreciate both! Sadly, I have less time to play than usual lately (thus less opportunity for any error to arise, this means also less need for a solution), but I'll consider finally updating then.

I guess I could mark this thread as solved, since I got a lot of useful advice and help so it completed its purpose (also the problem somehow became less frequent to the point of it being only a minor annoyance now), but I'll keep it as it is for the time being, until I can verify 100% that the alpha patch really solves this issue. Thanks again, I don't think I'll need any more feedback in this specific matter. :)
