NOTE: The following troubleshooting steps were associated with MY machine, specifically. You might have better luck getting Re-Volt to run out of the box, especially if you have a newer version of Wine. This thread, however, is basically here to answer the question "Does Re-Volt Work in Wine?". In a nutshell, the answer is yes :P

Does anyone know if this game Re-Volt works in Wine? I'm thinking about getting it here on GOG since it's currently on sale with another racing game (Race the Sun) for ridiculously cheap, but my computer only runs Linux now, so I get by with running most of my games in wine. (Heroes 3, Fallout, POD GOLD, Raptor, Rollercoaster Tycoon, etc)

Anyone know if THIS game runs in Wine? If not, I might use this topic to log my experiences getting it to work.

P.S.: I looked on the AppDB and I can't find the GOG version. Everything else is a retail CD version or something. They all have relatively good ratings, but I still wonder if anyone got this GOG version to work in Wine.

Also, just picked it up anyway since it's *very* cheap, and only set me back 2 bucks.

hey billy, I am a AppDB maintainer of Re-Volt on WINE, running linux myself as my main system. The GOG version is essentially Re-Volt 1.2 Beta so that's why I haven't made any new entry for the GOG.com version of the game yet. But maybe I should!

In any case, yes Re-Volt works very well through WINE (I'd say platinium, here on arch linux 64-bit). The music might work slightly different than on Windows (it will play the *.mp3 files in the Re-Volt folder instead of the *.ogg files), but it should still work regardless. Thanks! I'm running Debian Wheezy with Wine 1.4x, I'll give it a try now!

I just bought the game and it ran out of the box in the Crossover version 10.1.0 of Wine (Wine from Crossover's branch, not the actual Crossover product). It should work out of the box in newer versions like 1.6.1 as well, but there is a screen flickering bug on OS X that got introduced somewhere during 1.3.x, that's why I had to use such an old version of Wine. (I haven't tried multiplayer yet, but it's already explained by others)

Well it goes to the "Please Wait" 'screen, and it stays there. You continue seeing that screen, but if you press keys you can hear interface sounds. Wine version is 1.4.1

Is there any particular reason you don't want to update to 1.6? The versions where the second number is even (1.2, 1.4, 1.6) are considered stable.

I'm using Debian Wheezy. The Wine version for Debian is 1.4.1. I perhaps could compile a new version or something if I wanted

That sounds odd, especially since I had 1.2 with 1.4.1 back when that was hot.

What you can try to do Billy is to open your terminal and:
- cd to your Re-Volt folder
- type "wine revolt.exe" and see if there's any interesting messages popping up in the terminal (please tell if there is)
- maybe try do a: "wine revolt.exe -window 800 600 32" and see if that works any better.

Could you post some info about your computer such as graphics card? I'm on Intel and nvidia here, both working quite well. You might want to try the "Emulate a virtual desktop" option - perhaps that will help it.

Just to inform to future readers that BillyMaysFan59 got his issue fixed by installing the latest Re-Volt 1.2 alpha patch (as of today version "rv1.2a13.0815").

Yep. Works now. :D I'll see if I can beat championship mode

EDIT: when trying to restart race the game freezes, you can work around this by quitting the race, then manually clicking through all the menu options to reset the race. Everything else seems to be working fine as far as I know, installing new cars and tracks is flawless. I wish you much better luck getting this cool game to work in Wine, whatever version you're using.

well when it freezes I can't access anything, so I have to restart the whole computer.

Yeah, I'll try Win98 compatibility when I can get to it. And in window mode, for good insurance.

EDIT: I'm also wondering if it would be possible to make a version of this patch that would add native Linux support to Re-Volt. I know nothing about that stuff, just a thought :D

EDIT 2: Heh, Sload seemed to do it. I can even view the replay too! (That made the game freeze in the same way) Compatibility mode didn't seem to do anything

Again, I hope anyone reading this has better luck getting the game to work in Wine. It's just rad beyond rad, with these troubleshooting steps it works fine on my system.
