Something odd I've noticed with the game. When I first installed the original version, when I first ran the game it started up, black screen, then crashed - gave a Windows error message asking whether to search for a solution online or just close. Second run and all subsequent runs it was fine.

I installed the newly released version today and the exact same thing happened. First run I got the same error message, but second run it was fine.

So, not really an issue as the game is up and running and working fine, but just the initial run after installation it crashes out.


For reference:
Vista Ultimate x64
Core 2 Duo E8500
4GB DDR2 RAM
XFX GTX260 Black Edition

I didn't install DirectX 9.0c with the installer but I do have the latest release of 9.0c installed already.

No responses? Nobody else getting this?

Well, I think I've found out what it is, though I can't be 100% sure. When I installed the latest version (released today) I noticed my anti-virus analyzing it as it was running, and after a set time it then kills off the process and asks if it was okay and whether to run in sandbox or normally on subsequent runs. So I think this killing it off is what caused the first time only crashing. For reference, I'm using Avast! Anti-Virus.

IIRC, you can make the file an exception in Avast or however one calls the process of letting your AV scanner know to stop scanning the file permanently.

Just as an aside, what you describe is one of the reasons I stopped using Avast, but it's more of personal preference and should not mean that I am telling you to stop using Avast :D.

I used to use AVG but that became very bloated, and that was when I made the move to Avast. I have wondered about whether to change to Microsoft Security Essentials, but I heard that recently they had an update that caused some problems, which is a little unsettling.

For now I'll continue with Avast, see how I get on. After all, it is only first time run that the analyzer kicks in, and there may be a way to run exceptions or disable it. Exceptions might be better though as all my games are in C:\Games\ so I could make that folder an exception.

I haven't experienced anything with MSE and I have it on autoupdate. I use it at work on a Vista system and at home with Win 7 and I don't recall any major issues. Of course, your mileage may vary and all that :D.

What were the problems, by the way?

I can't remember what the MSE problem was exactly. Some users had posted about a problem with an update (possibly it was somewhere here in GOG forums that I saw it) and to get it fixed they had to completely uninstall MSE and re-install it.

Oh, and on a different note, this thread doesn't appear in my recent posts list for some reason. Forum bug?

Not sure. It might depend on how many threads you participated in although I have no clue about web dev stuff so take my words with a grain of salt or two :D

Well, I've had a search but I can't seem to find it now. I only really participate in GOG forums (because GOG is awesome with a great community) so it is the most likely forum where I saw it mentioned.

EDIT: Oh, you were referencing the forum bug. Well, nevermind, it's minor. :)

This hasn't occured to me, then again I run 32-bit OSes. Might be an XP or 64-bit issue for all I know as far as MSE is concerned :D.

I use 64-bit to take advantage and full use of my hardware, what with 64-bit CPU and 4GB RAM.

I've not heard much more about the MSE issue, so maybe it was just a bug that got fixed? In any case, I'll wait a while before I consider changing.
