Stop asking for unrealistic implementations. That's not gonna happen at all, and I'll explain to you why not.

First, this is not a remaster project, GOG responsibility here is to just make this old game playable and available to everyone just as it were back in the day. They won't make any changes to the game or add anything new, this is completely out of their scope. If you want to ask for something you'll have to wait for Capcom to release an actual remaster for this game which probably won't ever happen, until then, stop asking and demanding GOG.

Now, regarding the actual game, you probably don't have any idea how this game was developed. This game hasn't 3D scenario, The only 3D objects in this game are the characters models, enemies, items, interactable objects and the invisible stuff such as hitboxes, boundaries and etc.

The scenarios are just pre-rendered background images. For Capcom to implement such a thing as Widescreen support, they would have to re-render those images if they still had those, which they probably don't. Then they would have to reprogram all the camera angles within the game to make them work properly with the wider images, the list of changes they would have to make goes on and on... So, that's not gonna happen.

Take care

That's why there is reverse engineering

You can play it in widescreen but it will be stretched a little bit. That's the way I'm playing it and it doesn't bother me at all.

Won't happen.

And, regarding playing it stretched: I really don't know why you'd want to do that. Do you like your circles oval, and your faces round?

I absolutely hate it when people upload 4:3 content stretched in 16:9 on Youtube as well... there's nothing which looks worse and more unnatural.

Opposed to that, it takes 5 minutes to get used to a 4:3 picture on a 16:9 screen.

I think it's better to play the cube version of the game by the dolphin is good
To make this game "widescreen", they would need to redraw all of the 2D assets that make up the environments.
I don't think you fully comprehend what an ask that is.

Isn't that the remake? That's a different game, basically. And, it's also available as a HD remaster for PC.

So you're saying that a big company like CAPCOM doesn't have the files from their classic games?
I really really doubt about it.

in my case, working in engineering department, we have our drawings saved in servers for example.

Losing assets happens.
Sega lost the source code to several of their high profile 32-bit era titles.
This is why you never saw re-releases of stuff like Panzer Dragoon and the original House of the Dead.

LOL, I wonder if Nintendo, for example, has super metroid (SNES) original files for example;

Well, I still think Capcom has original files from their classic games, like the 3D models of the mansion in RE1,
They just don't want to spend money to re-render them again in higher resolutions, I think that would cost a lot.
Lots of hours would be necessary to do it.

Then you love unnaturally stretched images.

This is still happening with all old games, and i think that is time to stop it...

Why you prefer stretched images???

Why you prefer stretched images???
Some people just don't care.
Then some media stretch somewhat "good" to 16:9 on LCD screens.
2D Mk games when stretched into 16:9 doesn't look that bad to be fair and if you are willing to lose some top and bottom image they are near perfect looking.
On the other hand some 3d games can loom awful.
Resident Evil Code Veronica X for the PS2 if you force 16:9 with no patch it looks like crap. But for some reason Silent Hill 3 also the PS2 version forced into 16:9 doesn't look at odd. In fact looks quite good.
