Anybody else seen this? Where you and/or competetors start in water then drown? Any idea what's causing that?

I realise not many play this anymore, and even fewer will see this, but still, weird one.

I know this is an old post, but I'm playing through the game now, and I encountered the same thing, so for posterity's sake, here's the answer. It seems that when a player completes maps on other planets, they can spend 'Legacy' points to manipulate the terrain, which is shared by all players ala No Man's Sky. Apparently a number of players have been deliberately wiping the player's starting terrain as a form of griefing. Frankly, it ruins enjoyment of the game, since there's many maps that are like this. Maybe if you launch the game the first time on a computer with no Internet connection, and never connect while playing the game, you'll get the original, default maps.

I think that developers should correct this flaw and prevent extreme modifications. Some players modify the terrain both to drown you in the first second of the game and to drown the enemy if you are fast enough to avoid death. The idea of leaving a legacy for the next players is interesting, but unfortunately this went wrong and should be revised. As for the possibility to play disconnected from the internet you can simply disconnect before starting the game on that particular map, the legacy changes are not registered on your computer and for this reason there is no need to worry about the connection since the game installation.
