I posted this on another thread already, but since it was ignored, I decided to make a separate thread:
I have a terrible framerate, no matter what options I tried - I tried to change the graphics mode, the resolution in both the game's exe and the setup.exe, the compatibility mode to other versions of Windows (I use XP), and so on... but nothing worked, I get a pretty bad framerate :( Also, because of the framerate, the audio isn't quite right either, and I need to press the buttons more times in some cases in the menu. Anyone can help?
Pentium IV 2.5 GHz
768 MB RAM
nVidia GeForce 7300 GT 256 MB
Windows XP Professional

the possibility of running a number of different programs does come into play..
how are you running it right now?
Hmm...
Try tinkering with the .CONF (DOSBox configuration) file to the game. For example, use My Computer or Windows Explorer to navigate to the following directory to the first Redneck Rampage:
C:Program Files-GOG.com-Redneck Rampage Collection-Redneck Rampage
...and look for a file named "DOSBox.conf". Right click on it and select "Edit" if it's there or "Open With..." and select Notepad.
From here, the different sections of options are self-explanatory, but try and look for the following lines, and change them accordingly. These are what I have them set to:
Under the [dosbox] section, change memsize=16 to memsize=32
Under the [cpu] section, change core=auto to core=dynamic
And as far as the Graphic mode goes, try either "ddraw" or "opengl". "ddraw" tends to work the best for me.
From your specs you should be able to run it just fine. I have an AMD single-core cpu with about the same speed and a nVidia card also, and can run all three great at 800x600 in DOSBox.

I tried these and... nothing :S Which is pretty strange, because I remember playing games on DOSBox before, which worked normally. From what I read in the other threads it looks like a new installer is coming, I guess that may become my last chance... thanks for the help anyway! :)

DOSBox isn't bad, I can run Blood - generally regarded as the toughest BUILD engine game to get DOSBox to play nicely with - in it at 800x600 pretty comfortably, and even at 1024x768 if I turn the frameskip up to 1, which ain't bad. But then again, I have a quad-core Phenom 9850 - your mileage may vary, of course, though basically any modern dual-core will do fine for any DOS game. Also, remember that Windows x64 can't execute 16-bit code, so without using DOSBox and instead opting for a VDMSound-style solution you'd be cutting out a lot of people.
Hi all!
The game runs very (unplayably) slowly on my old desktop computer - Windows XP SP3, P4 2 Ghz, 1024 MB RAM, ATI Radeon 9600XT 128 MB. I decided to try it on my laptop, the game runs fine, and I didn't even use the highest performance profile of the laptop - Windows Vista Home Premium, Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 1.66 Ghz, 1024 MB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2300 384 MB.

Can you upgrade the video card on your old desktop? That may be the bottleneck...
EDIT: "upgrade" not "update"...

DOSBox relies on the CPU almost entirely; the video hardware is used for rendering to the screen, but it is only as a software-rendered image. A more powerful video card would help with things like frame buffering and such but beyond that I don't think it would make a meaningful difference to DOSBox performance.

I don't plan to upgrade the desktop computer. Eventually I will buy and build a completely new one instead. I'm playing the game on my laptop. I just posted to let you all know that the framerate may very well depend on the configuration.
But I have to add though, that even my desktop computer equals to the recommended requirements given on the game's page, however the game isn't running well on it...

Hmm weird. Perhaps a DXDiag will help root out the possible problem?
