I've just gotten the games, and I'm enjoying the original Red Faction immensely, but there's a minor problem.

Seems every once in a while, the game will crash to desktop after saving. I haven't lost saves yet, but as you can imagine, having to start the application every few minutes is somewhat annoying. Anyone know what's going on?

I'm running the following system:

Windows 8.1
AMD FX-8350
8GB RAM
AMD Radeon HD 6800

Not sure about this, but can you run the setup from the Red Faction launcher and take a look at the D3D Rendering setting? It should show some value in megabytes. If it is set at 8MB then increase it. I think it goes up to 32MB, but I don't yet have the GOG version to check. I have heard that this setting being at 8MB can result in crashing after a short time.
Have you tried Pure Faction, a community made patch. I'd suggest you use it or at least give it a go.

Would seem that the render cache was the trick. Not sure why, but since I increased it to 32MB, I've not had a single post-save crash. Knock on wood, of course, but it seems this was it.

Great news. :)
That said, Grogger's suggestion, to use Pure Faction, is highly recommended. Fixes some bugs, gives more resolution options, and better multiplayer support.
