After reading that Wailwulf has a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro that has it's own button manager, I picked one up too. However, it isn't registering my button assignments. I open the Logitech Profiler, reassign the buttons, and launch the game from the Profiler.... and everything is still the default controls.

This seems to mainly be a problem with my versions of RB3D that have Promised Land/HASP or RotJ installed. When I create a profile assigned to the default game (which I open using theRB3DXPFIX.exe sound fix program), it reads the assignments.

What am I doing wrong with the others??

Frankly, as much as I love the HASP/PL combo, and the RotJ planes, I'd be satisfied playing the "classic" version, except that it crashed on me after completing my first mission. I do recall seeing some other stuff on the forums about crashes, so I'll look a little further, but didn't find anything about it crashing w/o the mods installed.

HASP also crashes when I try to LOAD a campaign mission, and RotJ was giving me some weird menu when I tried to load a mission, but it didn't do it just now (though, I'm away from home without a joystick, so I didn't actually click "fly mission").

Finally, do I have to load PL before R0tJ? I tried adding it in just now to my R0tJ game and didn't notice a big difference in a Fly Now mission.

Sorry for all the questions, but thanks so much for everyone's help here! I love this game!

PS: I'm running this on an Asus netbook with WinXP (32). I'm also getting some frame rate issues, even though I've set all of the "setspeed.exe" settings to 100%. Those didn't occur before I got my joystick, and (in the un-modified version anyway), seem to be worst when I'm climbing, which seems weird to me.

I'm afraid you'll have to wait for Wailfwulf or another more knowledgeable forumer than I for the other questions, but I might be able to help with this one.

Are you using a glide wrapper? If so, which one? Also, did you rename or move the folder RedBaron3D was in (or any folder in it's path) before resetting setspeed.exe to 100%? Sometimes that can cause setspeed to loose the information about where RedBaron3D actually is and not change the program. What frames per second are you getting? You can tell either by using FRAPS or by turning on Red Baron's frames per second indicator (can't remember the button off the top of my head, but it's in the manual).

FPS is "Alt-F" and I'm often dropping to around 6 fps (or less) in the middle of a fight. I very well may have moved the files (certainly for HASP and RotJ, but not sure about the original install). I assume re-setting them at 100% (even though that's what they all show) might help? I kind of wondered about that. I DID start using the ReLoad and/or soundfix executable between having good and bad fps, so maybe that messed with how the game reads setspeed.exe. I'll check that out, thanks.

Ah yes, alt-F, makes sense :)

So ReLoad *shouldn't* be a problem with respect to this, but I'm not sure about the soundfix executable. Out of curiosity, try the multiplayer executable - the FPS should be really high for multiple reasons (no AI/enemy planes/etc), but I'd be interested to know what FPS you get in the multiplayer executable. I'd also be curious what FPS you get in DirectDraw mode vs. Glide mode in single player. I found zeckensack's glide wrapper to be more efficient than dgvoodoo, but it didn't look quite as nice as dgvoodoo. I don't know how it compares to the others. Those are the two glide wrappers I've tried.

Anyway, what I would do since you are using a glide wrapper and mods on a netbook, re-download Red Baron 3D from GOG and the first thing you do is to make setspeed 100%. After that you can do anything you want to the program - including changing the file path, etc ... However, you won't be able to change setspeed again if you do alter the file path where the RedBaron executable is found because setspeed is tied to that file path and will not be able to find the executable again. If you open setspeed again after altering the file path, it will give a warning message and say everything is at 99% or 100% (even if you *didn't* set it to such before changing the directory where Red Baron is found in) and it won't let you change it. However, setspeed will actually be at whatever you last set it at - which may be quite low if you've didn't change it from its default value before changing the file structure.

I've not had much success getting mine to work so the only button I use is the trigger. Everything seems to be working fine but, in the end, the changes don't take. Now I'm wondering if the sudden elevator problem I've been having is actually due to my extreme 3d pro.

By "sudden elevator" do you mean that your plane pulls up? Because I've been noticing that whether or not I have a joystick plugged in. Mine pulls up and a little right, usually.

Anyway, Wailwulf specifically said in another thread about mapping joystick buttons (I don't have it handy now) that he uses the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and it has a button manager with it. I assumed (foolishly?) that this means he has been successful in reprogramming the buttons with this stick....

I can also play with just the trigger, but it's *so* much more useful to have keys like f5, e, Num pad 0, etc. mapped to a joystick.

Do I have to install that 1.0.7.8. file myself, or is the GOG version ready to roll?

It's possible than on XP, the setspeed program can re-find, the executable despite it being moved, but on Win7 it can't (or maybe GOG has improved the version of setspeed they are using ... but I doubt that). However, do try my suggestion regarding setspeed to see if that works better.

GOG's version of the multiplayer exe is ready to fly and you can choose to fly a practice mission without signing in to any servers. Some servers require a different executable because GOG's version has a no-cd patch that they don't like, but for our purposes GOG's multiplayer exe should work fine.

P.S. The slight uptick is just the trim - WWI aircraft had fixed trim (by and large), so at faster speeds they might kick up a bit depending on where they were set at on the ground.

Hi guys,

I'm away from home right ow, but...

One thing I have to do is set a default game profile for the joystick. When I am going to play IL2, I open up the JS profiler and manually set it to my IL2 configuration. When flying RB3D, I set it to my RB3D config. I have never been able to get the profiler to automatically use the right profile, thought it was just me, guess not, and been doing that for 5 years now that didn't think about it.

As to MMP, the GOG's version will fail with any server using security due to their "No CD Crack." All that needs to be done is get the baronmmp.exe that is from the stock game.

When it asks you for the CD, click on the upper, right cross six times and the game will start without the CD.

Actually, the opposite. I can't climb and full back often just means a slow dive.

Is this in the stock game or a modded game?

If modded set all Realism settings to "Full Real" G-Forces ON, Torque Effects ON, Flight Model AUTHENTIC, and Instruments AUTHENTIC.

Been set that way forever. It is modded (HASP SP3) but has been working fine for a few years. Just recently started doing this. This is the same issue touched on a month or so ago when I thought it best to reload the game. So much to-do though - finding all the barns, balloons, etc and having to add them in just the right order. My working basic game was just that - no mods and no graphics - so was basically useless. Live and learn. procrastinating - haven't flown in a month!

Have to try that thing with the joystick too - would be great to use its full capacity in RB3d.

OK, I seem to have solved it!

First FPS:

Per Crazy_dave's suggestion, I did a fresh install of the game, ran setspeed.exe first thing, then copy-pasted three copies of the RB3D folder--one for Hell's Angels (HASP, for anyone new to RB3D who might be reading this in the future), one for Revenge of the Jastas (RotJ), and one for the Western Front Patch (WFP). I'm busy AND lazy, so I've only installed one (WFP) completely now (well, as far as I'm going to take it; there is some *crazy* modding going on out there!!). I got the base game running before copying the files and had 13-30 FPS, which is serviceable (if not ideal) for me.

After installing Promised Land 1 (PL), von Tom's Campaign manager (CM), and WFP, I ran that version and now get 30-100+ FPS!! Woo! Don't know why improved graphics=better FPS, and don't really care.

(I should note that I usually run the game in Direct Draw, not Glide, which is unfortunate, but worth it for the FPS, until I can figure out how to improve the Glide situation.)

I've installed HASP on another version, but apparently forgot to include the PL graphics, so I still need to do that, but that brings me to the joystick issue....

As before, I could make and play a profile for the stock RB3D game, but whenever I tried to make a profile for another version, it either wouldn't take when I loaded the game, or would tell me that a profile already existed for that "path" (depending on what shortcut/executable I mapped the profile to).

I'll try to explain as simply as possible. I CAN'T run the game from ReLoad or the windows XP soundfix executable and get a working profile. As for the "Shortcut to Baron.exe" link--I'd made that *before* copying the RB3D files. This means that if I linked a profile to that, it would try to load the stock game still, creating the conflict (since I already had a profile mapped to the stock game). That was what tipped me off to...

THE JOYSTICK SOLUTION!!!
Within the HASP and WFP RB3D folders, I deleted the old shortcut links, and created new ones, then created a new profile in the logitech profiler, and VOILA! They both worked. Unfortunately, I can't link the profile to the ReLoad option (making RotJ a no-go, apparently). However, then next thing to try is to load the game from the ReLoad shortcut (instead of booting it up from the Logitech profiler) to see if the game/joystick are still linked up.

So anyway, I now have three working versions (still haven't fiddled with RotJ--that takes some time), and all have acceptable to downright great FPS, and all work great with the joystick. I hope this helps others, and let me know if anything I wrote was unclear.
