I downloaded my gog version of RB3D two nights ago, and when I started it I got the
old Sierra/ Dynamix startup graphics where the red plane chases the other, anyway, when
it crashed 2 or 3 times. So I've deleted it until I understand this. It was in a gog file..
This question / problem has been solved by Namurimage
If you deleted it on account of the crash you have to install it again and troubleshoot the issue just like with any other game that crashes.
Here's a potencial solution for your crash.

I'd already downloaded it before, and I got the gog version startup. This was a second download to play with, and got the Sierra startup. Weird.

Ah, so you were worried about that logo thing. I thought you had unistalled on account of the game crashing ;)
But what do you mean gog version startup ? Are you talking about the install process or about starting the game when it's already installed ?
I'm speaking of the game start whereby the gog version goes straight to the main
menu, and the Sierra started with the two planes and the Sierra/Dynamix logo. I was curious as to why this event occured.
Yes the Sierra one would not continue after the opening bit of plane, logo. The old
'has encountered a problem needs to close' appeared.

Ah, ok, i understand now.
I don't have this specific game, but to the best of my knowledge the original intros that were part of the games are present in gog's version. I have many gog games and the original intros with logos from the developpers and/or publishers, etc., are there.
Maybe it was a fluke that the dinamyx logo didn't come up the first time the game booted. In any case, if you downloaded the file from gog, i really wouldn't worry about that.
About that error message, take a look at the link i posted on my first post. Other people here were having that issue and they found a solution.

You are correct, with patience I let it play out and it was the intro to RB2, then RB3D kicked in. So it was my impatience at fault.
